Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has signed HB26-1322 into law. The legislation is aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ young people from conversion therapy, just months after the US Supreme Court struck down the state's previous ban on the practice.
The legislation, signed on the first day of Pride Month (1 June), prohibits licensed therapists from imposing a "predetermined outcome" related to a patient's sexual orientation or gender identity. State lawmakers introduced the measure after the Supreme Court ruled in March that Colorado's earlier conversion therapy restrictions were not "viewpoint neutral."
“Conversion Therapy is harmful, can traumatise kids, and is a scam to waste people's hard-earned money. This new law provides Coloradans who have been subject to this dehumanising treatment with the tools to heal and move on to live strong, healthy and authentic lives,” Polis, who is gay, said in a Monday (1 June) press release.
The law also gives survivors of conversion therapy more time to pursue malpractice claims against providers. In addition, Polis signed an executive order directing state agencies to ensure public funds are not used to support conversion therapy programs.
“People shouldn’t be ripped off by those falsely claiming that they can change who you are attracted to or who you are. In our Colorado for all, everyone can live authentically, and should not be subject to hateful and simply ineffective conversion therapy,” Polis said.
