Spring Lake Ranch Therapeutic Community Therapeutic community promoting recovery for adults with mental health & related challenges through

Spring Lake Ranch Therapeutic Community is a residential treatment program in Vermont that offers individuals with mental illness or substance abuse issues an opportunity for healing through work and community participation. We serve adults (18+) with schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, dual-diagnosis and other mental illnesses. Since 1932, our core belief has been that the process of he

aling and recovery can best take place in a setting that is supportive and respectful, where people are treated as individuals, and are expected to contribute to the daily life. In the midst of working together a sense of belonging develops from which trust, self-esteem and growth are natural consequences. Residents typically come from a hospital or rehab, but can also come from home or college. They work five hours a day, side by side with staff on our 600 acre farm. Through their work with the farm animals, in the garden, furniture shop, or woods, residents get back on their feet by challenging themselves to move forward and gain confidence along the way. In the evenings and on weekends we offer wellness and leisure time activities including dual diagnosis and coping skills groups, NA and AA meetings, a Hearing Voices support group, basketball, pottery, skiing, music, and yoga. After learning new skills at the Ranch, many residents move into our transitional and extended programs, which provide a full continuum of care in nearby Rutland, VT. Our goal is to help people move from hospitalization or period of to an independent life. The sense of belonging to the community and the commitment to meaningful work, shifts the focus from a person's illness to what a person can do, in spite of great challenge, with the help of a supportive community.

We celebrated the Ranch's version of May Day last Friday, and it couldn't have been more lovely. As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, remember that nature and community have the incredible ability to heal. Take some time this weekend to get outside, be with friends, and enjoy the colors of spring. (We also highly recommend twirling!)

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we discussed peer support in a residential treatment setting. This year's MHAM theme is More Good Days, Together. For residents and staff who aren't necessarily clinicians, how can we let go of the need to fix or save someone and just be there for each other? What can we offer to our fellow Ranchers in everyday moments to help someone who is struggling have more good days?

We wrote down ideas on index cards that will live in the Main House and be a reminder of the resources that are available to us all, simply by being here together. Enjoy this small selection and beautiful stream. We hope it makes your day a little better. ❤️

As our Capital Campaign winds down, we are focusing our fundraising efforts on the $1.5MM needed to build a new home for Farm Crew and all our animals. (Special thanks to Farm Crew Assistant Olivia for the adorable drawing!)

This effective farm-based programming has outgrown the dilapidated barns that currently support SLR’s animals. It’s time to build something new.

Our Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 is available to read on our website. A special thank you to the resident who provided a beautiful testimonial. Here's an excerpt:

"Finding a community so kind and supportive felt miraculous, and it gave me the motivation I needed to truly take charge of my mental health."

"Because residents and staff work side-by-side every day, we see each small win and struggle as it happens. We can be there for one another in the moment to celebrate or respond quickly when mental illness makes us feel like good days can’t happen. We get to know one another—truly—and understand what each person’s own version of a good day is. Then, we can help each other see more of those days through support and the shared purpose of meaningful work."
