What happens after history ends?
When Pennhurst State School and Hospital closed its doors in 1987, the institution ceased to function, but the story did not end. The buildings remained. The memories remained. The debates remained.
In "What Remains? - What Pennhurst Became", the Allegany Preservation Society examines Pennhurst not as it was, but as it exists today: a historic site, a preservation challenge, a tourism destination, a cultural symbol, and a landscape facing an uncertain future.

Through archival footage, historical research, contemporary videography and deep analysis, this documentary explores how places continue to evolve long after their original purpose has disappeared. From abandonment and decay to preservation efforts, public interpretation, paranormal tourism, and modern redevelopment proposals, Pennhurst has become many things to many people.

But beneath every discussion lies a larger question:
What must a historic place become in order to survive?

This documentary is not an attempt to revisit Pennhurst's institutional history. Instead, it is an examination of what happened after the institution ended, and how memory, economics, preservation, and public interpretation continue to shape one of America's most recognized institutional landscapes.
Produced by the Allegany Preservation Society.
Preserving history through research, documentation, and education.

For nearly eighty years, Pennhurst State School and Hospital operated as a world unto itself.
It had its own power plant, farms, workshops, tunnels, dormitories, and medical facilities. Thousands of children and adults lived within its walls, many spending decades or their whole lives there.

Built with the intention of providing care, Pennhurst eventually became one of the most controversial institutions in American history.
But how did it happen?
How did an institution created during an era of reform grow into a place that would become the focus of national investigations, landmark court cases, and a fundamental rethinking of disability rights in America?

Our newest documentary, "Pennhurst – A System Built To Care", explores the complete story, from its creation and expansion to its operation, decline, and eventual closure.
This is not a story about an abandoned building.
It is the story of a system, the people who lived within it, and the ideas that shaped generations.

Knobmount Yard – Western Maryland Railway

South of Ridgeley, West Virginia, along the narrow North Branch of the Potomac River valley, lies the former site of Knobmount Yard, once a working piece of the Western Maryland Railway’s freight network.
Knobmount’s early purpose was tied directly to the WM’s push westward across the Alleghenies and its development of the Connellsville Extension. In its operational prime, the yard functioned as a compact classification and staging point, handling coal traffic and general freight moving between the Appalachian region and the WM’s main lines toward Cumberland and Hagerstown. It was never a large terminal in the traditional sense, but rather a tightly engineered facility designed for efficiency in difficult terrain.

As traffic patterns changed and the railroad modernized, Knobmount’s role shifted significantly. By the 1970s, the yard was officially downgraded from active classification service and transitioned into bad order car storage and overflow use. What had once been a fluid, working yard became a quieter holding point, still rail-connected but no longer central to the railroad’s operating plan.
Even so, the physical plant remained in place for decades. Through the Chessie System era and into the early years of CSX consolidation, the yard tracks continued to exist largely intact. It was not until 1995 that Knobmount Yard was finally closed permanently, ending its long but increasingly quiet railroad life.

The rails did not disappear immediately as much of the trackage through the yard remained in place until 2000 and 2001, when it was ultimately removed by L.B. Foster, bringing a final physical close to over a century of railroad presence on the site.

We’re excited to share that members of the Society were recently on-site at Pennhurst, filming for our second documentary currently in production: Pennhurst – A System Built To Care.

This new film takes a deeper, more comprehensive look at the history of Pennhurst State School and Hospital, an institution that once stood as part of a nationwide system designed to care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over time, however, the reality within its walls became far more complex, shaped by overcrowding, evolving medical practices, and changing public awareness.
Our work focuses on presenting that full history through documented evidence, exploring not only how Pennhurst operated on a daily basis, but also how it came to symbolize a broader shift in how society understands care, responsibility, and human dignity.

During our recent visit, we captured new footage that helps bring these spaces, and their stories, into clearer focus.
If you haven’t yet seen our first documentary on Pennhurst, we encourage you to watch it for important background and context as we continue this project.

As always, our work remains grounded in research, accuracy, and a commitment to telling history as it was, thoughtfully and responsibly.
We look forward to sharing more as production continues.

Yesterday was a busy and rewarding day for the Allegany Preservation Society!

We began the day setting up at the Annual Youth Summit at Allegany College of Maryland, where we had the opportunity to connect with approximately 30 high school and college students who visited our display. It was encouraging to see such strong interest from the next generation in preservation, railroading history, and our ongoing work.

Later in the day, we proudly hosted the Paw Paw Railroading Heritage Seminar, which welcomed about 15 attendees. Participants enjoyed learning about the rich railroading heritage surrounding Paw Paw, the Magnolia Cutoff, and the Society’s efforts toward the acquisition and eventual restoration of the historic Paw Paw Station.

Also, we were notified that our Documentary Film on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad titled, "The Line That Refuses To Die" was accepted to be included into the Maryland International Film Festival in Hagerstown, Maryland.

We were also grateful to witness a few special surprises at the seminar.
Moments that made the event even more meaningful for everyone involved.
Thank you to all who attended and supported these efforts. Stay tuned for more updates!

The Mettiki Coal Company is shutting down its Mountain View Mine in Tucker County, West Virginia, after nearly 50 years of operation.
This closure is driven by lost demand at a key customer’s plant and the economic pressures facing the coal industry. The mine’s long-standing rail service, historically supported by the Western Maryland Railway and today by CSX, has been a vital link in moving West Virginia coal to the market.

This isn’t just a business announcement; it’s a big impact on families, communities, and the rail traffic that has run through these hills for generations.

As production ceases and reclamation work begins, we’re reminded of how shifts in energy demand and infrastructure ripple across industries and the towns connected to them.
