REPOST • It feels like a really good time to repost this video I put together last year.

To this day, Gavin Newsom has never commented on California City. It wasn’t until December that the AG acknowledged the facility and wrote a letter saying the conditions inside were violations of international human rights. And he “urged CoreCivic to do better.” I need more than that. The people in power are letting all of this happen without any real fight.

I foolishly thought a journalist SOMEWHERE would pick up this story after I posted the video. CA has been erased from the national view and conversation and what people have seen isn’t the reality of what is happening in the state. I find it fascinating that nearly a year later and still people will talk about every other facility in the state but they won’t talk about California City. And there’s a governors race and not a single one is talking about water.

I had every intention of making several follow up videos because there is so much info in this video and it’s all really important, but I was pulled into the very real life and death situations locally in LA and I don’t have a newsroom with resources to run everything down ethically. I WISH I had the resources.

REPOST • .map | 500 people held captive by ICE are bravely on hunger/labor strikes across the country, persevering despite enduring assaults and brutality from ICE officers, retaliation, the abduction of strike leaders to other facilities, weakened physical health and illness from inhumane detention conditions, and illegal threats.

It is Day 9 of 300 people hunger & labor striking at Delaney Hall. For the last 10 days, roughly 120 people have been on hunger strike at the Adelanto Processing Center and Desert View Annex in Adelanto, California.

In addition, people are on hunger strikes at the Prairieland Detention Center near Dallas, Torrance County Detention Center in New Mexico, and Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington (L.A. Taco, The Stranger). Here are some of the strikes’ demands:

Demands of Delaney Strikers:

- An immediate in-person meeting with Governor Mikie Sherrill at Delaney Hall so she can directly observe conditions and hear testimony from detained individuals.

- The immediate release of all prisoners including vulnerable detainees, including elderly people, pregnant women, young people, and individuals with serious medical conditions.

- Meaningful and fair review of immigration cases and habeas petitions.

- An end to what detained individuals describe as coercive pressure to sign deportation or voluntary departure documents.

Demands of Adelanto Strikers:

- Bond reform: A fair, transparent, and legally justified bond system.

- Improved conditions: Remediation of mold, repair of water infrastructure, clean water, functioning facilities, and habitability across all units

Adequate medical and mental health care

- Nutritious food: A diet that sustains basic physical health

- Accountability for ALL deaths

- Right to organize and communicate: The ability to meet collectively, speak with outside advocates, and communicate with family and the public without interference or retaliation

“Half of the yard at the former Wayne Correctional Center in North Carolina is surrounded by a red-brick, two-story building with some windows boarded up, the other half by barbed-wire gates.

The yard is where Kerwin Pittman often sits to take meetings. He calls it the vineyard. When he toured the space to decide whether to buy it, the vineyard gave him a sense of calm. It evoked memories of being incarcerated for over 11 years.

As far as he and his team can tell, Pittman is the first formerly incarcerated person in U.S. history to buy a prison.

As the executive director of the nonprofit Recidivism Reduction Educational Programs Services (RREPS), his goal is to turn it into a “Recidivism Reduction Campus.” Pittman wants it to be a place where people recently released from prison can live and get job training, digital literacy training and trauma-informed care.

It’s a dream he’s had since he was in prison.”

Assata Shakur, a revolutionary, writer, and lifelong freedom fighter with the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, has died at 78 in Havana, Cuba, where she had been living in political exile since 1984.

Branded an enemy of the state and the first woman placed on the FBI’s most wanted list, Assata’s impact persisted through her vision of a freer world, which continues to inspire today’s struggles for justice, abolition, and freedom worldwide.

Today, February 21, we commemorate 60 years since Malcolm X was assassinated. Amidst the celebration of 100 years since his birth, the fire of struggle he lit still burns.

Malcolm X left us with important lessons: that liberation will not be handed to us, but that it must be taken with organization, discipline, courage, and unity.

100 years after his birth, the forces of white supremacy, capitalism, and imperialism remain, but our people’s movements are strengthened by the lessons Malcolm and countless other revolutionaries left us. His legacy is not just in the past; it lives in every act of resistance, demand for dignity, in all of the fighting movements to unite the oppressed across the world.

Today, as we honor Malcolm X, we do not mourn—we commit to fight against racism and exploitation. We commit to building the struggle while strengthening solidarity and internationalism. We commit to the unyielding fight for liberation—not as history, but as an urgent, present task!
