🌟 SHARE! Spotlight

Intern, Trainee, and Now Peer Support Specialist: Vanessa's Story

Vanessa's path to SHARE! began with a friendship and a willingness to surrender to something better. After four years of living unhoused on the streets, disconnected from her family and struggling with her mental health, Vanessa found her way to SHARE! through a friend named Elena, a Peer Support Specialist at SHARE!. What started as a step in her own recovery quickly grew into something much bigger. "This is a place where you're welcome, this is a place where you feel love and support," Vanessa says. "I call it a home because I never had that."

Now over a year and a half into her recovery, Vanessa has completed SHARE!'s Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Training program, earned her certificate, and joined the team at SHARE! Culver City as a Peer Support Specialist. The tools she gained through training, she says, are ones she applies every single day, inside and outside of work. "That's the beauty of SHARE!."

What makes Vanessa's approach so powerful is exactly what she has lived through. She knows firsthand what it means to feel lost, invisible, and without a support system. That shared experience is what allows her to meet others exactly where they are. "I truly believe I have a voice to use," she reflects. "Just to let other people know, I'm just as you, hop on board."

Vanessa's journey is a testament to what becomes possible when community, peer support, and lived experience come together. She came to SHARE! with nothing but willingness, and today she gives back that same hope to others. "Don't give up on yourself," she says, "because you are worth it."

Sitting down with Harris, Associate Executive Director of External Affairs at Disability Rights California, on It’s Just Healing | The Game Plan Episode 13, Jason opens up about his inspiring 30-year journey of recovery from substance use and mental health challenges. Together, they dive deep into the heart of what makes peer-led models so vital, exploring how the peer-to-peer approach serves as the ultimate antidote to shame.

Jason also brings his sharp advocacy insights to the table, breaking down why California’s CARE Act is a step in the wrong direction for our communities, and why voluntary, peer-run solutions deserve the spotlight instead.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, SHARE! pauses to honor the men and women who have served our country — and to celebrate the Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN) team making a difference in their lives every single day. Through VPAN, trained veteran peer specialists connect veterans, service members, and military families across LA County to housing, mental health care, employment support, and more. Because no veteran should have to navigate the system alone. Thank you to all who have served.

We had an incredible collaborative day yesterday diving into a game-changing tool for our community: the free LA Streetlight () App! 📱✨

Built specifically for Transition Age Youth (TAY), L.A. Streetlight is a peer-to-peer platform providing up-to-the-minute resources—from safe spaces and food access to trusted local support—for young people navigating life's most uncertain moments.

Shannon had a fantastic sit-down meeting with Susan "Suzy" Herbert, LMFT (SHARE!'s Director of Clinical & Peer Support Services) and Tom Haberkorn (Director of Housing & Real Estate).

During Shannon's visit, CEO, Brian D. Ulf, met with the app's visionary creator, Shannon Munford, to discuss the huge possibilities for this partnership.

Thanks to Suzy’s amazing history of working with Shannon, the synergy in the room was electric, and it was an absolute pleasure getting behind the camera to film their conversation!

Stay tuned for the video! In the meantime, you can check out the L.A. Streetlight app on the App Store to see how it’s lighting the way forward for TAY youth. 💡
