💜 October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month! 💜

Some children can’t tell us what they want with words, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have something to say. 💜

Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that often causes individuals to lose the ability to speak and communicate verbally. But being nonverbal does not mean having nothing to say. Every child deserves the opportunity to express their needs, feelings, and personality. 💕

✨ DID YOU KNOW? An estimated 1 in 12 people may have complex communication needs that require support beyond speech alone. That includes many children who are nonspeaking or nonverbal and need other ways to communicate. 💗

This is why the mission of Emberly’s Smiles is so important! We help bring communication boards to adaptive playgrounds so children who are nonverbal or speak different languages can connect, play, and communicate with the people around them. 🛝💜

In honor of Emberly and every child who deserves to be heard, let’s spread awareness, create inclusive spaces, and remember that every voice matters, even without words. 💕

Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that primarily affects girls. It occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 to 15,000 females worldwide and is most often caused by changes in the MECP2 gene.

Children with Rett syndrome typically develop normally during the first 6 to 18 months of life before experiencing a loss of purposeful hand skills, speech, and motor abilities. Rett syndrome can also affect movement, breathing, seizures, sleep, and many other aspects of daily life.

Today, we remember the beautiful girls like Emberly whose lives have been touched by Rett syndrome, and we stand with the families who continue to raise awareness, advocate, and hope for a cure. 💜

Until there’s a cure, we keep raising awareness.
