Happy !

Today we honor the legacy of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas who were finally informed of their freedom, some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was those people, and the generations of Texans who came after them, who made the bold declaration to celebrate this day, marking a reality we know far too well in this country: freedom may be delayed, but it will never be denied.

Though our fight for freedom sadly continues, today we pause to celebrate and embrace the joy of our ancestors who believed in the possibilities of a more promising tomorrow. And in that joy, we remain anchored, steadfast in our pursuit of true freedom and justice for all.

As we proudly open the 50th Southwest Regional Conference, we are filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and sisterly pride.

The Southwest Region has been powerfully shaped by the exemplary service and visionary leadership of Regional Director Crystal Barker and Regional Representative Kamyia Gibbs. Their stewardship of the region is marked by an unwavering pursuit of excellence, a genuine love for every soror in their care, and an abiding commitment to the communities we are called to serve.
