Not only did linguistic and interpreting skills improve while career milestones were achieved, but participants were becoming quality mentors and mindful practitioners in the process. Over the years the group expanded and evolved into a formal non-profit mentoring organization, Big Picture Mentoring.

Origin Story

What started as one woman’s quest to become a nationally certified interpreter transformed into a community of colleagues and mentors dedicated to skill advancement, collaboration, and service. In 2012, at the incipience of her national certification journey, Monica Romney called a group of interpreter peers to form a study group focused on certification preparation. After meeting only a few times, it became apparent that expert supervision would be necessary for the progress of the group. Monica went about inviting expert interpreters and native language users from her community to mentor their weekly practice sessions. The benefits of such supervision exceeded what even she had envisioned. Not only did linguistic and interpreting skills improve while career milestones were achieved, but participants were becoming quality mentors and mindful practitioners in the process. Over the years the group expanded and evolved into a formal non-profit mentoring organization, Big Picture Mentoring.
