Rank has it's privileges!! Since I'm the Post Commander of VFW Post 1797 I was one of 3 judges in a pie baking contest. Of course, being one of the judges, we had to sample each one of 9 different pies. It was a difficult task, but somebody had to do it - myself and two of Creston's local law enforcement officers were the "lucky" judges. After much tasting and deliberation, we were able to come up with the top 3 pies - Carmel Apple, Peanut Butter Cream, and Pecan. Something else I can add to my resume. I forgot to mention that the Pie Judging event was conducted by the Homestead Assisted Living facility in Creston, IA. This was part of their Iowa State Fair celebration that included many games and other activities for the residents.

Our local Veteran of the Week recognition program is coming to an end for this summer. We recognize Union County veterans from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It's an honor to be able to participate in these recognition events for the veteran and their family. This weeks honoree is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Air Force.

Had two opportunities today, 31 July 2026, to recognize two veterans in two separate activities. Starting my 6th year of participating in the EveryStep Veterans Pinning event and also recognizing another area veteran in our weekly Veteran of the Week event.

Creston's VFW Post 1797 held their 4th Annual golf tournament at Lakeshore Golf Course in Afton, IA on Sat. July 11, 2026. The early rounds were played in somewhat "cooler" temps.with a slight north breeze, but the temps increased considerably into the later rounds. Lots of adult beverages were consumed to keep the golfers properly hydrated. A special thanks to Post 1797 members Dennis Able & Rick Dresbach for all of their efforts to make this tournament successful. Some of the procedures will go towards the VFW scholarships at Southwestern Comm. College for students having veteran connections.

Happy 250th to all the citizens of these United States of America. One couldn't have asked for a better day in SW Iowa for the 250th Anniversary parade. Temp. in the low 80's, slightly overcast, low breeze. The parade route in Creston was lined by at least 10K people celebrating our country's 250th anniversary. Creston VFW Post 1797 led the parade with their 1953 Jeep, followed by a duece & half truck with veterans and a hatrack wagon with more veterans. Special Parade guests were two Union County WW II veterans - 99 year old Daryl Haines and 98 year old Dale Manship. These two veterans rode in the trailer behind the Jeep - accompanied by Post 1797 Commander O'Daniels
