When your child picks up a crayon, they’re practicing skills that help prepare them for school and everyday life. And the best part? You can help them learn while you color together!
🌈 Name those colors!
“Can you find something blue?” “What color is your flower?” Talking about colors builds vocabulary and helps children learn to identify and describe what they see.
🐶 Name the objects!
Ask your child what they’re coloring. “What is that?” “What does a dog say?” “Where does a dog live?” Simple questions encourage language, memory, and conversation.
✏️ Staying in the lines is a skill!
It might look like a simple coloring task, but controlling a crayon and trying to stay within the lines helps children develop fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and pencil control—skills they’ll eventually use for writing.
🧠 Let them make choices!
A purple sun? A green dog? A rainbow-colored firefly? Let them! Coloring gives children opportunities to make decisions, express creativity, and build confidence.
💬 And don’t forget to talk!
Ask questions. Tell stories about the picture. Let your child explain what they’ve created. That conversation can be just as valuable as the coloring itself.
