Happy Father's Day to the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who pass down a love for the land, a strong work ethic, and the importance of stewardship.

From checking cattle to caring for healthy grazing lands, the lessons learned on the ranch often last a lifetime and shape the next generation of land stewards.

Thank you for the legacy you build every day. Wishing you a wonderful Father's Day from Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition! πŸŒΎπŸ„

These 'movers and shakers' help livestock producers by providing biological pest control and remove breeding sites for pest insects and nematodes.

Dung beetles are classified into three categories: rollers, tunnelers and dwellers. Each type plays an important part in managing and dispersing manure in pastures and prairies.

Dwellers aid in nutrient cycling by breaking down and burying animal waste. The waste has essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that get returned to the soil.

Tunnelers in particular improve soil aeration allowing for better air and water circulation. This aeration gives the soil the ability to hold more moisture especially helpful during dry times. Tunnelers also help relieve soil compaction which in turn helps plants' roots with favorable growing conditions. This activity increases water filtration preventing water runoff.

All three types of dung beetles help reduce fly populations by removing fly breeding habitat, reduce other pests by consuming dung and their natural habits can help reduce the spread of parasites.

🌾 Pre-Turnout Forage Budgeting

Before cattle hit the pasture, estimate how much grass you have. A simple forage check helps set the right stocking rate and protects pasture health.

Before turnout consider:
β€’ Available forage production
β€’ Past winter grazing pressure
β€’ Spring rainfall conditions
β€’ Burn history/status of the pasture

Most Kansas rangeland should target 25% harvest efficiency to maintain healthy grass stands.

Planning ahead helps avoid overgrazing and keeps pastures productive all season.
