The Law of the Sword: The Source of Every Good Gift

"Don't be deceived, my brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." — James 1:16-17

One of the first lessons every future black belt must learn is the ability to discern the source. James begins with a warning: "Do not be deceived." Deception occurs when we misidentify where things come from. Temptation does not come from God, but every good and perfect gift certainly does. God is not the author of confusion, evil, or compromise. He is the source of truth, wisdom, life, and salvation.

James contrasts the unchanging nature of God with the shifting shadows of the heavenly lights. The sun rises and sets. The moon waxes and wanes. Stars move across the sky. Everything in creation is subject to change. God alone remains constant. His character, His promises, and His purposes never fluctuate. For the martial artist, leader, and disciple, this becomes a foundation of stability in an unstable world.

The first and greatest gift from God is salvation. James teaches that God chose to give us birth through the Word of Truth. Within this principle we discover three foundational realities.

First, salvation is ultimately the work and choice of God. No man can save himself through effort, achievement, rank, knowledge, or works. Spiritual life begins with God's initiative.

Second, salvation comes through spiritual rebirth. Jesus and the apostles repeatedly taught that a person must be born again. This new birth is not physical but spiritual. It marks the beginning of a transformed life and a new identity.

Third, the Sword of Truth—the Scriptures—is the instrument the Holy Spirit uses to bring about spiritual life. The Word of God cuts through deception, reveals truth, and produces transformation. Just as a warrior sharpens his blade, a disciple must continually sharpen himself through the study and application of God's Word.

James describes believers as the "firstfruits" of God's creation. In Scripture, firstfruits represented the first and best portion of a harvest, serving as evidence that more was yet to come. Those who have been born again become visible evidence of God's renewing work in the world. Their transformed lives point toward the future restoration of all things.

This hope extends beyond individual salvation. Creation itself longs for redemption. Paul writes that all creation groans as in the pains of childbirth, awaiting the revealing of God's children and the redemption of our bodies. Though we experience the firstfruits of the Spirit now, we eagerly await the fullness of what God has promised.

The final picture is given in Revelation. A day is coming when God will dwell among His people. Every tear will be wiped away. Death, mourning, crying, and pain will cease. The old order will pass away, and all things will be made new.

For the future black belt, this principle is essential. The Sword is not merely a weapon; it is the source of discernment. Through it we learn what comes from God and what does not. Through it we receive spiritual life. Through it we remain anchored to truth in a world of shifting shadows. The disciplined practitioner learns that true mastery begins not with controlling another person, but with submitting himself to the unchanging truth of God.

Black Belt Principle: Before you can lead others, you must learn to discern the source. Every good gift comes from above, and every lasting victory begins with the Sword of Truth.

The Six Levels of Leadership Enlightenment ✨️

Everything rises and falls on leadership, but leadership itself rises and falls on alignment.

Through Scripture, Bushido, business, martial arts, and my own journey, I have found that every meaningful leader progresses through six stages.

Wholeness — first mastering self through the fear of the Lord and faith that seeks to please God.

Service — learning to pour into others from a place of abundance rather than need.

Stewardship — faithfully managing and multiplying what God has entrusted to you.

Leadership — earning the trust and influence necessary to guide others toward a worthy purpose.

Steward Leadership — multiplying leaders, building culture, and leaving organizations stronger than you found them.

Moral Authority (highest level of leadership) — where titles matter little because decades of fruit, character, sacrifice, and faithfulness speak for themselves.

Most people seek influence before character, authority before stewardship, and recognition before service. Yet God's order has never changed. Before a man can lead others, he must first govern himself. Before he can multiply, he must first prove faithful.

From my experience, the greatest breakthroughs in life, leadership, faith, and business did not come from learning more information. They came from becoming the kind of man God could trust with greater responsibility.

The progression is simple:

Wholeness ➡️Service ➡️ Stewardship ➡️ Leadership ➡️ Steward Leadership ➡️ Moral Authority

Master self. Serve others. Multiply what God has entrusted to you. Lead faithfully. Leave a legacy.

If these principles resonate with you and you desire greater purpose, clarity, leadership, faith, and influence, join us for our next Lord x Lions Leadership Gathering on June 19th at 6:00 PM at Lago Vista. 🏠

Come sharpen your faith, strengthen your leadership, and learn principles that can transform every area of your life.

Harajuku Lesson #1 : Never underestimate the size of the cotton candy. 🍭😂

While exploring the famous Takesh*ta Street in Harajuku, we made a mandatory stop at Totti Candy Factory, home of some of the biggest cotton candy you'll ever see. What looked like a simple snack quickly turned into a family challenge.

One thing I love about Japan is the attention to detail—even something as simple as cotton candy becomes an experience. From the colors and creativity to the energy of Harajuku itself, this place reminds you that life doesn't always have to be serious. Sometimes the mission is simply to enjoy the moment.

If you're visiting Tokyo, put Totti Candy Factory on your list. Just make sure you bring backup... that cotton candy is bigger than it looks. 🇯🇵🍭🤣

The deeper I study the history of Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and the old warrior traditions of Japan, the more convinced I become that the techniques were never the true treasure.
Different schools carried different names—Yawara, Jujutsu, Kumiuchi, Judo—but they all sprang from the same root.
The methods changed, yet the principles endured.
What survived through the centuries was not a throw, a lock, or a kata. It was the pursuit of self mastery.
The ancient warrior understood that the first battle was never against an opponent, but against fear, pride, anger, and weakness within himself.
The battlefield simply revealed what was already there.

This is why Bushido is still alive today. It manifests through martial arts, but it is not confined to them. It appears wherever men and women submit themselves to discipline, duty, sacrifice, and service to something greater than themselves.

The medium may change, but the spirit remains.
The art refines the body. The Way refines the inner man. ☦️
