FROM "NUISANCE" TO DREAM DOG: Isabel’s Happy Ending!

When Isabel first arrived at Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue (SCGRR), she weighed 98 lbs, her beautiful cream coat was gray with filth and mats, and she had been medicated just to keep her quiet. She was not getting the love and attention she needed and deserved, and suffering from ear infections and a severe UTI.

But beneath all that dirt and pain was an absolute angel. ✨

From the moment she stepped into her foster home, Isabel proved to be the ultimate "Dream Dog." After a gentle bath, a professional groom, and some much-needed medical care, her true colors shined. Her fosters reported:
* 🚫 ZERO accidents
* 🚫 ZERO chewing or damage
* 🚫 ZERO barking!
* 🚗 Plus, she became the ultimate co-pilot for daily school drop-offs!

We promised Isabel she would never lack love or attention ever again—and we found her absolute **perfect match**. ❤️

When her new family met her, it was love at first sight. They couldn't stop petting her, praising her, and showering her with sweetness. Waiting for her at her forever home? Two brand-new beds (just so she could choose her favorite!), tons of toys, and elevated food bowls fit for a queen.

**A note from her adopters:** *"We’ve never met a sweeter dog, we are SO in love. She is wonderful, we are so thankful you chose us!"*

Thank you to Isabel’s incredible fosters for healing her spirit, and to her new family for giving her the happily-ever-after she always deserved.

Welcome home, Isabel! 🐕✨

Welcome Home, Freddie!

We are overjoyed to announce that Freddie (formerly known as Arthur) has officially found his forever family! This handsome, one-year-old purebred Golden Retriever is starting a brand-new chapter with his FWITA turned forever family.

Freddie’s journey to us was a poignant one, as he was relinquished following the heartbreaking passing of his owner. It is never easy for a dog to lose their “person,” especially a loyal Golden who lived so closely with them. While we can never replace the bond he had with his first mom, we are so grateful to help him bridge the gap from a season of loss to a lifetime of new love. He is a resilient, sweet, and playful pup, and we know he has so much more love to give.

Freddie now has the ultimate team to help him thrive. Mom works from home, meaning Freddie will rarely spend more than an hour or two alone. Dad, an engineer and runner, is looking forward to having Freddie join him on outdoor adventures. Freddie is a total sweetheart AND was great with the 1 year old!! Everything they could have hoped for - they are in love🥰🥰

His new parents are committed to positive reinforcement and plan to sign him up for obedience and socialization training. Freddie will be sleeping upstairs with them, ensuring he feels safe and secure every single night.

They have been waiting a long time for the right moment to bring a dog into their lives, and we couldn’t be happier that Freddie is the one to fill that spot. Congratulations to the new family!

Pupdate: Baxter - he’s living his best life!

We received the sweetest update from Baxter’s mom:

“We just celebrated our 5th anniversary with Baxter on 5/8/26!

I cannot begin to tell you how much we love this guy!!! My friends call him the gentleman: he walks perfectly on a leash - never pulling and when he wants to cross to the other side, he goes behind you. We were told that he could be dog reactive, but Baxter has several dog friends including German Shepherds, Cavaliers, a Husky, a Shiba Inu and of course other Golden Retrievers.

He enjoys daily walks in our neighborhood, following us around from room to room, and special treats. He actually does a jig before every meal and every walk. Baxter came to us with his favorite toy - a squeaky hamburger. Although we have had to replace it several times over the years, he still cherishes it. He looks for it every night and brings it into our room at bedtime.

He brings so much joy and love to our life! I think you rescue people just as much as you rescue dogs:) Thank you so much for entrusting us with Baxter!”

Happy 1 Year Adoption Day (May 17) Anniversary sweet Millie!

We received this Gotcha Day anniversary pupdate from Millie’s family. Excellent news on her weight loss too!

“We have had an amazing year with Millie. She is an absolute joy and delight-we couldn’t imagine our family without her!

We go on walks every day. She has gotten healthy (lost 15 pounds since being rescued). She loves laying on the cold ground by the a/c in the kitchen. She loves her stuffies, playing ball, and her carrots and cucumber treats! She is still very much a foodie but has learned “her place” and will keep her distance if requested.

Our four year old dresses her up regularly. Millie doesn’t seem to mind-in fact we think she loves it. We are so blessed to have Millie and are looking forward to so many more memories with her!”

Millie is truly living her best life now and we couldn’t be happier for her and her forever family!

What a beautiful, soul‑lifting story for Autumn. After everything she’s endured, it’s the children’s message that says it all — written in bright chalk but carrying the weight of a lifelong promise: “We are your family. We will take care of you and love you from now on.” There’s something extraordinary about the way kids welcome a dog who has known hardship. They don’t see the scars or the past — they see a heart that deserves to be safe. And in that moment, Autumn wasn’t just adopted; she wasclaimed with joy, innocence, and absolute sincerity. After all she’s survived, she finally has what every rescue dog dreams of: a family who chose her with open arms and open hearts. Thank you to this amazing team for staying on Autumn's side and finding this amazing family!

Sweet Autumn came in as an Emergency case.

While at her owners vet, she was diagnosed with Pyometra, which is a life threatening condition.
The owner was deeply saddened & did not have the financial ability to help her, and realized the best for Autumn was for her to be relinquished to SCGRR for Emergency surgery to save her life.

Autumn was transported to one of our trusted vets - her surgery included a spay, dealing with double ear infections & was brought up to date on vaccines.

She was also found to have a vaginal infection & skin hyperpigmentation (usually due to malnutrition). After a course of antibiotics & multiple increased feedings, she was on the mend.

Autumn is a super sweet dog, she thrived with this foster family & became best buds with their little puppy. Autumn had the benefit of a house full of Love & attention and soon became the Queen of the house.

She was taught manners & things like waiting for food, touching a button for a treat & mostly, being ever so wonderful & gentle with the kids.
Autumn loves kids & really perked up when with kids.

We got very few inquiries for her, maybe because she was older & many young pups are on the site. We really wanted another dog family, with kids if possible, but it wasn’t happening.

As it happens, the one you’re waiting for, Comes in! A family with 3 young girls and a gentle dog of the same age. They all piled in the car & drove to meet Autumn.

The little girls found chalk & immediately starting drawing hearts & words on the patio stating how much they want Autumn.
The dogs got along just fine, the girls were loving Autumn & Autumn loving them back.

Happy Life Full of Love Autumn!

Golden Retrievers are often described as “naturally good dogs” — and while they are loving, social, and eager to please, they are still dogs.

Resource guarding can happen in ANY breed, including Goldens, if boundaries, structure, and training are missing. Guarding food, toys, beds, spaces, or even people is not “being dominant” or “being bad” — it’s communication rooted in insecurity, genetics, lack of guidance, or learned behavior.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming a Golden will automatically “grow out of it” because of the breed stereotype. Early training, proper socialization, clear routines, and teaching dogs to comfortably share and trade are incredibly important.

A cute puppy who stiffens over a toy may become an adult dog with serious guarding behaviors if those signs are ignored.

The good news? Resource guarding can often be improved tremendously with proper training, management, and understanding. Prevention starts early — structure, consistency, and teaching trust matter just as much as love. 🐾

Oakley is a resource guarder and working with a trainer - she is available for adoption on our website.
