Veterans Writing Workshop

Veterans Writing Workshop The Veterans Writing Workshop provides free writing workshops for U.S. veterans in the New York Metropolitan area, Rockland and Orange Counties.

They publish veterans writing, and promotes dialogue between veterans, their families and civilians. The Veterans Writing Workshop (VWW) provides professional-quality writing workshops for all U.S. military veterans in the New York metropolitan area in public and clinical settings. Public workshops are held three times a year at Fordham University's Westchester campus in West Harrison, NY, and at

Fordham's Lincoln Center campus in NYC. The VWW also maintains ongoing writing workshops for Caregivers online in partnership with Caregivers Support at Hudson Valley VA. The VWW preserves and celebrates veterans' writing by publishing 'AfterWords,' a series of high-quality print anthologies featuring stories and poems by workshop members. All proceeds from the sale of these anthologies support the publication of more anthologies and the establishment of more veterans writing programs. The VWW also creates dialogue between veterans and the wider community through its Veteran-Student Story Exchange Program in which veteran writers visit public and private schools to give readings and engage in open dialogues with students and community members. The Veterans Writing Workshop is funded by the FordhamVets Task Force of Fordham University, PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Vet2Vet Program, Poets & Writers Readings/Workshops Program, and other generous funders.

On this Memorial Day, Veterans Writing Workshop remembers the fallen with this poem by one of our members, David Sandgrund:

A SONG OF STRUGGLE

Nameless you stand up on your feet of hope.
Nameless the tree stands up on its root.
This burnt land has never known peace for you

With hands stretched towards a dream that might be only
the invisible wind, you stand as a tree stands,
stretching its branches towards the blue

I have an idea why the tree and you are slashed and hacked.
Yet there is no escape, there is no escape for you,
you seek shelter in your own shadow

The moon and the stars you gather to bandage your wounds,
Your voice moist with your faltering teardrops,
like the leaves, you sing quietly as the wind softly blows.

You stand up… stand up….again and again…you stand up
You wait for the replenishing rain
Your shadow now your shelter
