Today we are saying “See you out there” to our colleague and friend, Madison, who is off to the University of Minnesota for law school.
Madison joined HiH as one of our first-ever interns in May 2024, helping to put on our “Upcycle Throwdown” event that summer. She was so excellent that in the fall we offered her a part-time role as our Youth Volunteer Academy (YVA) Coordinator, where she began to shine even brighter.
With Madison's injection of energy and unique competence, YVA developed into a stronger program, giving area high schoolers an amazing opportunity to learn about service in action. In fact, YVA thrives because of Madison. She managed three YVA cohorts with aplomb while completing her studies at Iowa and preparing for the LSAT.
After Madison graduated and decided on a gap year, we hired her as our Program and Services Coordinator, a role where she could share her talents around HiH. Over the last year, Madison has run our donation intake program, organizing furniture pick-ups and item drop-offs and keeping track of inventory in the warehouse and our overflow space. She also took on much of the initial rollout of our Express Bed Delivery Program, and, as perhaps her greatest legacy, named our bedside table building event (happening again this summer), “One Nightstand.”
HiH is so much better because of Madison, and so is Johnson County. We’ll miss you.
Madison certainly doesn't need much luck, but we hope you'll join us in wishing her “Good Luck” anyway! And good luck to anyone who underestimates her ability to move a mattress or to inspire a thoughtful reflection from a reticent teenager, she’s one of the best out there in both!
