Hi friends!

Does anyone have any Despicable Me or Minions decorations, toys, or props that we could borrow (or maybe even a giant moon šŸŒ)?!

Weā€™ll be participating in a Trunk or Treat this Sunday and decorating the Houses into Homes box truck Friday afternoon, and we want to make it look FABULOUS!

Houses into Homes is looking for our next Director of Operations!

You may have seen our announcement that our co-founder and development director Lucy Barker is stepping away from her full time role at HiH at the end of this year. Our former DOO Kristi Emick will serve as our new Community and Development Director and is already making things happen in that role.

This means we need a new Director of Operations. Maybe you? Someone you know? Now's the time to reach out! The application window is open until November 8.

The description is linked on our website. The operations of a nonprofit furniture bank are hard to encompass in a few bullet points, so if you've wondered about working at HiH before but have concerns about your relevant experience for this particular role, make an inquiry anyway. A passion for helping your neighbors is the only non-negotiable qualification, and working here gives you a chance to do that all day long.

It's almost that time of year again!!

We welcome and invite any and all Houses into Homes 2026 Volunteers to join us for a POTLUCK style Volunteer Luncheon! We will provide the main dish but would love for everyone to bring their favorite side dish or dessert to share :)

We hope to see you all on December 18th, from 12-2 PM! If you are planning to attend, please sign up to the Opportunity in Bloomerang Volunteer titled "2026 Volunteer Luncheon" and sign up to the shift to RSVP!

Announcing our 2026 Haul of Fame, which recognizes individuals and organizations who have had a tremendous impact on Houses into Homes!

This year's inductees are Alpha Gamma Delta Alums, Ron & Else Schardt, and Riverside Casino & Golf Resort. Our UI Community Connection award goes to UI Center for Advancement. Thank you to all our Haul of Famers for your valuable volunteer time and efforts and your financial support.

Thank you to our friends from the Iowa City Homeless Project for joining us on a much-needed delivery day! This outstanding group helped us out by doing a last-minute weekday delivery day and delivered furniture to two households, including two VERY large dressers. We couldnā€™t do it without our amazing community šŸ©µ

We want to thank everyone who came to our Home Sweet Home Happy Hour event last Thursday! It was a successful fundraiser (more details to come), and a fun time for everyone.

For those of you who attended our event at ReUnion, you learned about some of the things that we have been doing this past year. If you were not able to attend, here is a non-comprehensive list:

1. A record year in 2025: 1,240 neighbors in 422 households served, and over 200 tons diverted from the landfill.
2. Launched an Express Bed Delivery (EBD) program, through which weā€™ve delivered 625 beds (8,000 EXTRA nights of comfortable sleep).
3. Four new referral agencies (up for 40) and services expanded to ALL of Johnson County, including rural areas.
4. Furnished community living spaces for Immigrant Welcome Network, DVIP/RVAP, and Valor Pointe (veterans housing).
5. Founding members of Furnish Together, the first national coalition of furniture banks.
6. New United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties partner agency.
7. Youth Volunteer Academy Summer program included two cohorts (24 local high school students).
8. In the news: two front-page stories in the Press-Citizen, plus coverage from KCRG, Daily Iowan, Little Village.
9. 2026 Bill Reagan Human Rights Award recipient

You also heard our Executive Director announce that, at the end of 2026, our co-founder Lucy Barker will be stepping down from her full-time VOLUNTEER role at Houses into Homes. She was there nine years ago when HiH was an idea and a garage, and has been part of everything that is part of our operations today.

Lastly, a shoutout to all of you who stopped by our warehouse on Saturday as part of our Bring it Home donation drive! We had over 30 drop offs in two hours and donations in all sizes. We are always humbled by the generosity in our community.

Bring it Home Donation Drive is TODAY - Saturday, October 10th, from 10am to 12pm. We expect this to be one of our biggest drop-off events this year!

Stop by with your donations, grab a donut and coffee, and stay to see a demonstration by Apollo, our bedbug-detecting dog (at noon)!
