Tennessee Tech absolutely dominated the 33rd Annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) at Oakland University! Our incredible team just returned from Rochester, Michigan, after sweeping nearly every top award across three intense challenges: AutoNav, Design, and Self Drive. Building reliable autonomous robots is far more challenging than it looks, but this team proved that Golden Eagles are truly Tech-tastic! Our crew was the first to complete the entire AutoNav race course, and they stood out as one of only six finalists in the design presentation. Through late nights and rigorous testing, they gained invaluable hands-on experience and brought home serious hardware. Check out this legendary lineup of awards:
AUTONAV Cup → TNTech Crusaders
AUTONAV Challenge 1st Place → TNTech Crusaders
Design Challenge 1st Place → TNTech AT NA
AUTONAV Challenge 5th Place → TNTech AT NA
Paul Lescoe Award → TNTech AT NA

Pictured in the front row with their awards and trophy are ME majors Kyle Madigan and Mary Rooker, ME Faculty Advisor Dr. Daniel Yoon, and ME student Hangyeol Ko. Standing in the back are MEs Jonathan King, Sungjoon Yoon, Yejoon Song, and EE major Louis Bauer. Please join us in congratulating these brilliant students for showcasing Tennessee Tech’s engineering excellence on a national stage!

We are incredibly grateful to announce new, generous support for the Tech Engineering for Kids (TEK) project! Tech engineering alumnus and business leader Richard Carlton, along with local Cookeville pediatrician Dr. Satya Chakrabarty and his wife, Sangita, recently made impactful donations to help more children and adults with special needs through the TEK program, launched and led by ME Professor Steve Canfield. Richard’s love for our department runs deep, and he is proud to help our students in many ways. For the Chakrabartys, supporting this initiative is part of a broader, heartfelt mission to serve and uplift local children in any way possible. This combined generosity will empower many more students to create meaningful, custom projects designed and built with our special clients in mind. Thank you to our incredible donors for investing in the next generation of mechanical engineers!

Today we are absolutely bursting with pride, as our Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering family almost completely swept the College of Engineering Faculty & Staff Awards Ceremony! We already knew our team was world-class, but it’s pretty awesome to see that hard work recognized. Huge congrats to our amazing winners: Dr. John Zhu, Dr. Rory Roberts, Lisa Meadows, and Dr. Steve Anton, pictured here with our Chair, Dr. Mohan Rao, in the center. We are so incredibly lucky to have the best faculty and staff in the game. Let’s keep that momentum going! Go MNE! Wings up!!

Huge thanks to Protomet for an incredible day in East Tennessee! Our Baja SAE team had an absolute blast touring the facility and getting a front-row seat to the action. Highlights included seeing our custom-fabricated competition parts hit the powder-coating line and getting an inside look at the anodizing process from one of our own—ME student and current Protomet co-op, Austin Thompson! We also loved catching up with ME alum Jeff Webster while exploring the entire plant. Generous sponsors like Protomet make it possible for our students to get the hands-on experience they need to be competitive on the track. We couldn’t do it without you, Protomet!

The Nuclear for All Career Expo today was awesome! Turnout was great, with hundreds of students swinging by to explore all the exciting professional possibilities in the nuclear industry, and two of our student organizations were there to welcome everyone. Lacey Coates represented the brilliant minds of Women in Nuclear, and Nolan Casebier and Nathaniel Randolph were championing the American Nuclear Society. We also got to hang out with some ME alumni, always a plus! It was a day full of energy, great conversations, and sparking interest in the incredible careers the nuclear field has to offer!
