In the Bible, Jesus Christ is presented as the Son of God who forgives the sins of humanity, rather than merely a prophet. Several key passages affirm this:
1. Jesus as the Son of God:
- In the New Testament, Jesus is directly identified as the Son of God. For example, in Matthew 16:16, Peter confesses, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Similarly, in John 1:34, John the Baptist declares, "I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
- At Jesus' baptism, a voice from heaven says, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22), affirming His divine sonship.
2. Jesus as the one who forgives sins:
- In Mark 2:5-7, Jesus tells a paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." The religious leaders accuse Jesus of blasphemy, saying, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Here, Jesus asserts divine authority to forgive sins, something beyond the role of a prophet.
- John 1:29 describes John the Baptist calling Jesus "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world," indicating His role in the forgiveness of sins.
3. Jesus' divine mission to save humanity:
- In John 3:16, it is written, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." This verse emphasizes that Jesus, as the Son of God, is central to God’s plan for salvation.
- Romans 5:8 explains that "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us," underscoring Jesus’ sacrificial role in forgiving sins.
4. Jesus as more than a prophet:
- While Jesus is sometimes referred to as a prophet, such as in Matthew 21:11, the New Testament consistently portrays Him as more than a prophet. In Hebrews 1:1-3, it is explained that, "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets... but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son... the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being."
Thus, according to biblical texts, Jesus is not only a prophet but is indeed the Son of God who forgives the sins of humanity.
