Day 6 - Today was our last full day in Puerto Rico. We started the day with a tour of the Cabezas de San Juan Nature Preserve. We toured the lighthouse, learned about iguana control efforts and the ecological importance of mangroves in coastal shorelines. Then we traveled to Old San Juan, had lunch then walked to El Morro for a self guided tour. We had a little free time in Old San Juan then a brief visit to the T Mobile District before dinner. Tonight the kids are spending time at the pool with their friends from Indiana and Ohio that we’ve been traveling with all week.
Tomorrow we head to the airport 4 hours before our flight due to long TSA lines here. Fingers crossed that we will leave Puerto Rico at 1:30 pm and arrive in Portland a little after midnight. Our group will get a hotel for the rest of the night and hopefully be back in Gilliam County early Tuesday afternoon.
This trip has far exceeded the kids’ expectations. The two other groups we have been traveling with have been fantastic kids and chaperones. Our tour guide and bus driver have also been great. One of the goals of these trips is to expose our kids to cultures beyond our small community and gain respect of other cultures through understanding and new connections. This trip has definitely met that goal! 🇵🇷

Day 5 - Our day started off with some early snorkeling. We saw Caribbean Tangs (Nemo’s), sun fish, sea urchins, a baby lobster, conch, sea cucumbers and learned about the different types of coral that make up the reef. Then we traveled back to San Juan just in time for salsa lessons and dinner.
Today is our last full day in Puerto Rico and we’re off to tour a nature preserve then back to Old San Juan.

Day 4 — We packed our bags and headed to the southern side of the island to Ponce. We toured the plaza, visited the Parque de Bombas, spent some free time exploring then learned how to make mofongo for dinner. After dinner we boarded boats in La Parguera and went swimming in a bioluminescent bay. Everyone was really excited about the bioluminescent bay and we did get to see the organisms glow but it was more of a fairy dust appearance than an overall glow. Everyone enjoyed swimming! Today we are heading back to the boats for snorkeling then we travel back to San Juan.
