An estimated $60 billion in federal Medicaid spending in 37 states (including DC) would likely exceed new federal limits on state directed payments for hospital services once fully implemented.

The 2025 reconciliation law made major changes to Medicaid eligibility and financing, including new limits on how much states can direct Medicaid managed-care organizations to pay for certain services, including hospital care.

Right now, thousands of NH kids are getting cleared for the school year physicals, immunizations and sports forms. That’s what regular access to a doctor looks like. For about 1 in 4 New Hampshire kids, that access exists because of Medicaid and CHIP. Dr. Arsnow put it plainly: health insurance isn’t a technicality. It’s the difference between catching an illness early and watching it turn into something worse. Health insurance keeps kids healthier, in school and less likely to end up in the ER. A new law change is coming to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that will soon add $190-$270/month premiums for many families.

This month, as school supply lists come out, summer reading wraps up and sports kick-off it’s worth remembering that Medicaid Matters.


Note: Premiums were set to begin in July and have been delayed.

New Futures submitted comments to CMS on the Interim Final Rule (IFR) for Medicaid work requirements, raising concerns about coverage losses for Granite Staters.

Our state has been here before: during the 2019 Granite Advantage attempted rollout, thousands of eligible residents fell through the cracks due to burdensome paperwork, not a lack of desire to work. We're asking CMS to revise the IFR to prevent unintended disenrollment, reduce administrative burden on providers, and ensure that medically frail beneficiaries can retain access to care.
