Rio Vista Elementary's third graders immersed themselves in indigenous culture at Tilden Regional Park, high up in the Berkeley hills.
"In preparation for our field trip, our class read about the culture and traditions of the Ohlone people. When we arrived, we partnered with three naturalists to learn about the languages, foods, games, traditions, and knowledge of the Ohlone. The students loved learning about Ohlone languages and how they used tule reeds to create tools like decoy ducks. We watched a demonstration of how the Ohlone people built fires and then played a traditional Ohlone hoop and stick game that helps the players practice their spear throwing skills as they attempt to throw a long stick through a moving hoop.
"When asked about things in the Bay Area that they are proud of, students agreed that they were proud of the local history of the Ohlone people and of the parks we have where we can learn about their culture." - ๐๐น๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐ช๐ถ๐น๐ธ๐ฒ๐, Third Grade Teacher
What a great day! Thanks to our donors, MDEDF is proud to make trips like these happen so students can experience our parks and the history of the Bay Area.
