Welcome back to Meet the Herd! Day 15 — Beau!

This handsome guy is Beau, our Silver King, Nevada mustang.

Beau originally came to me through the TIP program to be gentled, but it became apparent pretty quickly that this guy carried a level of fear that was different from a lot of the mustangs I've worked with.

Beau isn't aggressive. He's never been a "bad" horse. He is just genuinely, deeply afraid of people.

So instead of measuring his progress by what he should be doing by a certain point, we started measuring it by Beau.

For him, something that might seem tiny with another horse can be a HUGE accomplishment.

We've worked with him over the years, slowly building trust and giving him the opportunity to tell us what he's comfortable with. And somewhere along the way, the question stopped being "When will Beau be ready?" and became "Is Beau happy?"

And he is.

That's ultimately what matters to us.

Beau is now a permanent sanctuary resident. Maybe someday he'll surprise us and decide he wants more interaction with people. Maybe he won't. Either answer is perfectly fine.

He has friends. He has food. He has a pasture to run around in. He has people who understand him. Most importantly, he has the security of knowing this is his home.

There's no finish line we're trying to get him across.

We're just letting Beau be Beau. ❤️

If you'd like to be part of providing that kind of security for our permanent residents, you can join our Patreon for as little as $2 a month.

Welcome back to Meet the Herd! Day 14 — Yarrow!

Meet Yarrow, our handsome Roberts Mountain, Nevada mustang and one of our permanent residents.

Yarrow officially completed his gentling training this summer, and we couldn't be more proud of how far this boy has come.

But his story here is really just getting started.

Yarrow is going to be one of our Mustang Ambassadors, helping us show people just how intelligent, versatile and amazing these horses can be.

And we have some pretty exciting plans for him!

In 2027, Yarrow will be hitting the road and competing in Mustang shows! Our goal isn't just to go out there and win ribbons. We want people to meet him, hear his story and see firsthand what a previously wild mustang is capable of with time, patience and good training.

When he's not training or getting ready for his future adventures, you'll usually find him out in the pasture hanging out with his best buddies Stormy and John Boy.

He gets the best of both worlds—plenty of time just being a horse, while also having a pretty important job representing the Wild Ones we love so much. ❤️

I am SO excited to see what 2027 has in store for this boy, and of course we'll be bringing you guys along for the ride!

If you'd like to help support Yarrow and the rest of our herd, consider joining our Patreon for as little as $2 a month. Those small monthly donations add up and help us continue rescuing, rehabilitating and advocating for mustangs and burros in need.

Make sure you like, follow and share so you can follow Yarrow's journey from sanctuary resident to the show ring!

Welcome back to Meet the Herd! Day 13 — Willow! (On the left)

You might be surprised to learn that Willow actually came from the same Liberty event as Kitchi and Birdie!

Thankfully, Willow's story took a very different turn because she came home with us first and missed out on all of the trauma that Kitchi and Birdie experienced afterward.

So how did Willow end up here?

Well... Buttercup needed a friend.

Buttercup was young, tiny, and FULL of baby energy. The problem was our senior burros had absolutely no interest in keeping up with her or being her personal jungle gym.

We knew she needed another young burro close to her age and size that she could grow up and play with.

At the Liberty event, Willow was the only Sales Authority baby, and she happened to be the perfect age and size.

For those who don't know, Sales Authority is something we worry about with our Wild Ones. Unlike a BLM adoption, where the BLM retains ownership for at least a year, a Sales Authority animal becomes private property immediately after the sale. Once sold, the BLM does not continue tracking that animal.

There are rules prohibiting buyers from knowingly sending these animals into the slaughter pipeline, but that immediate transfer of ownership means one very important layer of protection and oversight is gone.

We've unfortunately seen firsthand how quickly a wild horse or burro can fall through the cracks once they're privately owned.

So when we saw this little girl and knew Buttercup desperately needed a friend, it honestly couldn't have worked out better.

Willow came home with us and became exactly what we hoped she would be—Buttercup's best friend. ❤️

Sometimes rescue isn't about stepping in after something terrible has already happened. Sometimes it's getting there early enough that the terrible part of the story never happens.

If you'd like to help us continue providing safe homes for burros like Willow, consider joining our Patreon for as little as $2 a month.

🌾 HAY UPDATE — LET’S FUND LOAD #2! 🌾

You guys did it — our first $220 load of hay is completely funded! ❤️

And we’re already more than halfway to the next one!

🌾 LOAD #1: $220 ✅ FULLY FUNDED
🌾 LOAD #2: $120 of $220 raised!

That means we only need $100 MORE to cover our second load!

Instead of focusing on the big number needed to stock the barn for winter, we’re taking this one load at a time. Every $220 means another load safely tucked away for the herd before winter prices hit.

🐴 $20 = 1 whole bale
🌾 We only need 5 more bales sponsored to fund Load #2!

Can 5 people sponsor a bale and help us finish this load?

Thank you SO much to everyone who has donated, shared and helped us get this far. ❤️

$100 TO GO! 🌾🐴🫏

🌾 Okay guys… we’re going to try again today.

Yesterday we shared our opportunity to stock up on winter hay, but unfortunately we didn’t receive any donations.

So instead of looking at the entire $1,800 goal, let’s start smaller.

Can we raise $220 today to cover ONE load of hay?

Hay is only $20 a bale right now. That means:

🌾 $5 = ¼ bale
🌾 $10 = ½ bale
🌾 $20 = a whole bale
🌾 $100 = 5 bales
🌾 $220 = this entire load!

This is the time of year we NEED to stock up. Hay is plentiful and inexpensive right now, but those prices won’t stay this way as we head into winter.

Our ultimate goal is still $1,800, which would allow us to stock enough hay to feed the herd through winter, into early spring, and hopefully all the way to next year’s first cutting.

But today?

We just want to put one $220 load in the barn. ❤️

Can 11 people sponsor one bale each?

🐴🌾 11 bales. $20 each. Let’s fill this load!

And if donating isn’t possible right now, please share or comment to help more people see this. Every bit of interaction helps us reach someone who may be able to help. ❤️

🌾 WE HAVE A HUGE OPPORTUNITY TO STOCK UP FOR WINTER! 🌾

It’s hay season, which means hay is about as cheap as we’re going to see it! Right now, we have the opportunity to purchase good hay for just $20 a bale — and we want to take advantage of it while we can.

Our goal is to raise $1,800 to fill the barn. 🐴🫏

The farmer has around 70 bales available, PLUS he’s going to come out and look at our fields and potentially cut and bale our own hay, which should produce another 20 or so bales!

If we can make this happen, we could have enough hay to:

🌾 Feed the entire herd all winter
🌾 Carry us through early spring
🌾 Get us to next year’s first cutting

That is HUGE for our little sanctuary.

Our first load is only $220, so every donation right now immediately helps us start putting hay in the barn.

By winter, hay prices can climb dramatically. We would much rather spend our donation dollars wisely and stock up now while hay is plentiful and affordable.

❤️ Please help us raise $1,800 and fill the barn for the Wild Ones!

Even $5, $10 or $20 gets us closer.
$20 = ONE WHOLE BALE OF HAY! 🌾

If you can’t donate, sharing, commenting and interacting with this post helps us tremendously too!

Let’s fill that barn. 🐴🫏🌾

Welcome back to Meet the Herd! Day 12 — Sebastian!

Most of you probably remember Sebastian because he came to us recently alongside Kitchi and Birdie.

Sebastian was one of the three mustangs we learned had ended up in the slaughter pipeline back in August. We put out the call for help, you guys showed up, and we were able to get all three to safety. No one was left behind. ❤️

Sebastian was a little different from the other two. It was pretty obvious that at some point in his life he had been handled, but he was incredibly timid and unsure of people.

It didn't take long, though, before we started seeing little glimpses of the horse underneath all that fear.

Within those first few days, Sebastian started actually seeking us out for comfort. He allowed me to hold his head and just stand there with him, which may not sound like a huge accomplishment—but with a scared mustang, those quiet little moments mean EVERYTHING.

Since then, we've just been letting Sebastian move at his own pace.

Like we talked about yesterday with Jerome, it takes as long as it takes. Some horses fly through gentling, while others need a little more time to figure out that they're safe.

Sebastian is safe now. He doesn't have to rush.

Our goal is to continue working with him and building his confidence, and Sebastian WILL be available for adoption! If this handsome boy has caught your eye and you think you might be interested in giving him his forever home, reach out to us! Let's talk about it. You don't have to wait until he's officially listed to start the conversation.

If you'd like to help us continue rescuing and rehabilitating mustangs like Sebastian, consider joining our Patreon for as little as $2 a month. Those small monthly donations really do add up and help us be ready when the next horse needs us.

Welcome back to Meet the Herd! Day 11 — Jerome!

Jerome came to us in 2021 from Nevada. He was originally another burro who was supposed to come here for gentling and then move on to his new home.

Well... Jerome had other plans.

Jerome struggled with some pretty serious fear aggression, and it became clear that rehoming him wasn't going to be the right thing to do. So he stayed, and Twin Arrows became his permanent home.

One of the questions we get asked ALL the time is:

“How long does it take to gentle a wild one?”

And my answer is always the same—it takes as long as it takes.

Jerome is the perfect example of that.

It has taken YEARS of patience, working at his pace, and letting him tell us when he's ready for the next step. There was never going to be a deadline where we decided he was taking too long.

And now, after all that time, we're finally getting to see this incredibly sweet boy come out. ❤️

Grace has also become Jerome's best friend, and having her by his side has helped him tremendously. Sometimes another animal can provide a level of confidence and security that we as humans simply can't.

Jerome may have taken a little longer than some, but that's okay. Gentling isn't a race.

If you'd like to help us continue giving wild mustangs and burros like Jerome the time they need, consider joining our Patreon for as little as $2 a month. Monthly supporters give us the consistent funding that makes long-term sanctuary and rehabilitation possible.
