The Education Law Taskforce brought together Legal Aid attorneys from around the state earlier this week to talk about civil legal issues, including school discipline, bullying, transportation, mental health supports in schools, vouchers, and students in foster care.

We also celebrated (with cupcakes!) the career and leadership of Kristin Hildebrant, who leads the Special Education Team at Disability Rights Ohio (DRO) and is soon to retire. Legal Aid and DRO attorneys alike shared the influence Kristin had on their understanding of education law.

As always, it's great to have advocates from Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati, Community Legal Aid Services, ABLE, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio - LASCO, Ohio Poverty Law Center, and DRO all in the same place!

The Family Law Taskforce brought together Legal Aid attorneys across the Ohio today, discussing topics including best interest of the child, shared parenting, kinship care, access to GALs, housing protections for survivors of domestic violence, and timely rulings on temporary orders.

It was great to see advocates from Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati, LAWO, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, Community Legal Aid Services, Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio - LASCO, and Ohio Poverty Law Center all around the same table.

Legal Aid leaders from across the state are in DC this week, reporting to our Congressional delegation about how we use the tax dollars they allocate to us to help Ohio communities thrive.

Legal Aid grantees of the federally funded Legal Services Corporation impacted 88,235 low-income Ohioans in 2025, helping stabilize housing, healthcare, education, income, and financial security.

As cybertheft attacks on SNAP benefits increased in recent years, Legal Aid attorneys across Ohio helped victims apply to the USDA for reimbursement of stolen benefits totaling over $30 million.

Now those USDA reimbursement funds are no longer available. When cybercriminals steal benefits from SNAP recipients, there is no way to get that money back.

Thank you to The Ohio Newsroom's Kendall Crawford for this thorough article on SNAP skimming and to Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati's Regina Campbell for explaining the dilemma of tens of thousands of Ohioans whose SNAP benefits have been stolen and cannot be replaced.

For Ohioans who rely on SNAP benefits, there's no built-in card chip protection from "SNAP skimming," where thieves attach skimming devices to card readers and steal SNAP benefits. Regina Campbell, managing attorney of Legal Aid's Income, Work & Health practice group, was interviewed by The Ohio Newsroom on the prevalent issue.

“Today in Ohio, if a criminal steals your SNAP benefits from your EBT card, you have no remedy to get reimbursed for the stolen benefits," shared Campbell. "That means people go hungry or rely on an already overburdened food bank system. We need to do better.”

State Supreme Court Justices from around the country agree: federal funding for Legal Services Corporation (LSC) ensures critical representation for families around the country who are trying to maintain stable housing, gain sustainable employment, and avoid consumer fraud.

A proposed 46% cut to LSC would leave thousands of Ohio veterans, seniors, and domestic violence survivors without essential civil legal services.
