Ohio SNAP-Ed is a community nutrition education program whose purpose is to promote healthy eating for Ohioans living with limited incomes. SNAP-Ed promotes healthy lifestyles with direct nutrition education and other community based approaches. SNAP-Ed, together with Ohio Department of Public Health, Ohio Department of Aging, Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Mid-Ohio Food Bank, and EFNEP,have launched a new social marketing campaign called Celebrate Your Plate. This engaging campaign promotes higher intakes of fruits and vegetables through a variety of print and digital materials, such as colorful recipe cards, videos, window slicks, and an interactive website.
About 70% of families do not consume the recommended daily requirement of fruits and vegetables and this is particularly true for low-income families. In addition, 31% of Ohioans are considered obese. Diets high in fruits and vegetables have been associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases including obesity.
In 2017, Ohio SNAP-Ed reached almost 400,000 adults, teens and young children. After participating in SNAP-Ed direct education classes, participants reported an increase in:
Eating fruits daily
Eating vegetables daily
Being physically active regularly
Having confidence in preparing meals at home
Being able to cook meals on a budget
The Celebrate Your Plate campaign complements SNAP-Ed’s direct education nutrition efforts. We strive to provide Ohioans with quality, evidence-based nutrition education programs that feature fun, fresh, and exciting ways to improve their nutrition and increase fruit and vegetable consumption.
