What is Lynch Syndrome?

Lynch Syndrome is a genetic mutation that alters your DNA, resulting in a higher chance, of many forms of cancer. 🧬 With Lynch Syndrome, the risk of gastrointestinal cancers is greatly increased, as well an increased chance of cancer recurrence.

MSH6 Gene: Lynch Syndrome

Mutations in the MSH6 gene cause Lynch Syndrome.

MSH6- Associated Lynch Syndrome:

Men with a mutation in MSH6 have a 44% lifetime risk (up to age 80) to develop colon or re**al cancer. Moreover, this syndrome is associated with a 30% risk of a second colon or re**al cancer appearing within 10 years of the first colon cancer. It is important to note that colore**al cancer risk remains higher after age 70.

Women also have a 20% lifetime risk for colore**al cancer, 44% lifetime risk for endometrial cancer and 22% lifetime risk for other lynch associated cancers.

People with Lynch Syndrome are also at an increased risk for other cancers that include cancer of the stomach, urinary tract, ovaries, small intestine, pancreas or bile ducts, sweat glands, and brain.

Individuals with Lynch Syndrome also tend to have more precancerous colon polyps that grow faster than individuals without Lynch syndrome. For this reason, anyone with Lynch should have frequent colonoscopies, even if they have several clear colonoscopies in a row.

I’m headed in today at 2:00 PM at The OSUCCC-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute for my 6 month endoscopy and colonoscopy.

I was Diagnosed with Stage IV colore**al cancer caused by a genetic mutation called “Lynch Syndrome”. Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths. 60% of Colore**al Cancer deaths could be prevented with screening. Had I known, that I was a carrier of the Genetic Mutation “Lynch Syndrome”, I could have been screened and possibly have prevented having to deal with the trouble that cancer has caused over the past three years! General recommendations suggest that you begin screening at age 50; however, if you come from a family with history of Colon Cancer it is never too early to get screened!
