Our Story
Columbus Woman's Club, Inc. In 1918, a group of fifteen women formed a French orphan unit and worked to relieve conditions among the children of Franc Our Story e. When the war was over they decided to stay together and formed The Columbus Woman's Club. It was incorporated and became a member of the State Federation of Women's Clubs the same year, 1918, with a membership of fifty women. Service, Wisdom and Culture was chosen as the club motto; ivory and gold as the colors; and the rose as the emblem. The following departments were organized: Literature, Press, Civic, Public Health, Patriotic, Music, Home Economics, Art, Drama and Philanthropic. By this time the Rose Luncheon was a part of the yearly affairs. As the Club was growing so rapidly, a need for a club house was felt. After much deliberation, the "Gray Home," 530 E. Town Street, was decided upon. Later a large auditorium was built as part of the club house and was in great demand by other organizations also. After sixteen successful years the club house was lost during the depression, and membership dropped off. However, a few of the faithful members continued to meet, and saved The Columbus Woman's Club. One of the most outstanding undertakings was the sponsorship of a full scholarship in the nursing or health-related field given annually to a female student from Franklin County, attending classes at the Ohio State University. Creative Living, a program of support for wheelchair bound young adults, has been a recipient of a large portion of the philanthropic funds in recent years. Columbus Woman’s Club meets once a month on the first Thursday of the month at 11:30 A.M. for lunch, a program, and a business meeting. Shortly before our meeting date we are called to confirm our luncheon reservations and to learn about the month’s activities and what to bring for our monthly food pantry collection. Meetings are held in the Brookside Country Club,2770 W Dublin Granville Rd, Columbus, OH 43235. After lunch, there is a program presented that will feature a speaker, a cultural event or light musical entertainment. The third Thursday of each month is reserved for members who can join our Out to Lunch Bunch; on that day we usually get out of Columbus and head to a location that has a special restaurant. We follow up the meal with a visit to an art gallery or hot shopping spot.
In 2018 we are very proud to celebrate 100 years as the The Columbus Woman’s Club,Inc
