Our Story
The “Breath of Hope” Celebration was initiated by Sandy and Mark Lomeo after Mark was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2014. They were surprised to discover the lack of funding for lung cancer as compared to many other types of cancer, and they decided to raise money by through a celebration of life. They formed a steering committee to advance their cause, and the Breath of Hope Ohio dinner gala was formed. Their gala fundraising efforts have been combined with the “Blue Beautiful Skies” Fund to directly benefit The James Thoracic Oncology Department for awareness, research, new treatments, and the eventual cure. Presently, lung cancer has a dismal survival rate. It kills more people per year than breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined. In fact, lung cancer kills twice as many women as breast cancer. Unfortunately, public perception is that lung cancer is a disease that only smokers and coal miners experience, but this is far from the truth. 65% of the new cases of lung cancer being diagnosed today are non-smokers. Links to environmental causes, such as radon, are currently being investigated, too. We at Breath of Hope are dedicated to efforts to #blowlungcanceraway. Our annual celebration and fundraisers throughout the year work to fund the Minds and Machines of the thoracic oncology department at OSUCCC-James. We invite all members of the community and those have been touched by cancer to join Breath of Hope Ohio and its mission by attending the event, donating on our website at www.breathofhopeohio.org, and spreading the word about lung cancer and its impact.
