Attention, Columbus growers! OSU's Franklin County Extension Office and the Ohio Department of Agriculture are collaborating to help YOU have a fall garden. On Sunday, August 16 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Monday, August 17th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Master Gardener volunteers will be distributing free seeds for drive-thru pickup at 2548 Carmack Rd., Columbus, 43210.
Then on Tuesday, August 18th, at 7:00 p.m., there will be a free webinar called Planting the Fall Victory Garden.

The flyer said the seeds will include "spinach, turnips, buckwheat or radish." I don't know if that means any one of those things, or if it means you'll get spinach, turnips, and buckwheat or spinach, turnips, and radishes. It's also unclear whether there will be any seeds other than those mentioned. Nonetheless, I would encourage you to grow any brassicas--kale, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower--especially if you have the means to cover your crop with a hoop house or low tunnels once the weather turns cool.
Also, remember to plant your garlic in October to harvest next July. If you want to grow winter wheat, plant it after the last date for flystrike...I think that's usually around the last week of September. Don't wait too long after that, though, as your yield can be reduced by as much as a bushel per acre for each day you delay planting up through the end of October.
