When Imam finally arrived at the Mother of Mercy Teaching Referral Hospital, the children’s ward team moved quickly to help Falgala.

Doctors discovered he was suffering from severe malnutrition and Tuberculosis.

He was extremely weak and unable to eat properly, so the medical team placed an NG tube to begin carefully delivering nutrition and lifesaving treatment.

For children this fragile, even small steps matter.

A little nourishment.
A little strength.
One more day.

Have you seen our latest impact in the Nuba Mountains?

Despite conflict, famine, and growing strain on healthcare access across Sudan, Mother of Mercy Referral Teaching Hospital continued to provide lifesaving care to hundreds of thousands of patients throughout 2025.

Our 2025 MMRTH Impact Report below highlights the patients treated, healthcare workers trained, and critical hospital operations sustained through the dedication of local teams and the support of partners around the world.

Take a look at what was accomplished in one of the most challenging regions on earth:

To reach the Mother of Mercy Hospital, Imam traveled for an entire week with her sick little boy.

There are no easy roads through this part of Sudan. Much of the journey meant hitching rides in passing vehicles while navigating the dangers and instability caused by ongoing conflict.

She traveled not knowing what would happen next...only knowing her son needed help.

Despite exhaustion, fear, and uncertainty, she kept going.

At 80, Rose, a widow from the village of Gako near the tri-border of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo, embodies a life marked by both profound hardship and unwavering strength. She arrived at a local hospital carrying a small bag with just two pieces of clothing. Hearing of a birth injury camp, a compassionate neighbor gifted her the transport fare, allowing her to make the journey despite her daily struggle to find food.

For decades, Rose persevered through countless challenges, raising her family while facing the heartbreak of losing loved ones, limited resources, and often the absence of support. Through it all, she found solace in the kindness of her community, who helped her secure a humble home with an iron roof, a small mattress, and even solar lighting—a testament to her resilience and the bonds she nurtured.

At the camp, Rose was diagnosed with uterine prolapse, a painful condition she had silently endured for years with only sporadic pain relief. At Rwibaale, she underwent a successful repair surgery. Just two days later, she left the hospital with renewed hope and gratitude, saying, "I am alive because of other people's help; they share with me what God has given them."

Approximate Distance covered to access surgery: 55.7km

More than 20 women recently received free surgery for childbirth injuries through a fistula repair camp supported by African Mission Healthcare and our partners at Ibanda Hospital in Uganda.

Watch this news feature highlighting the impact of restoring health, dignity, and hope to women who have lived with these conditions for years.

When Imam’s 2-year-old son, Falgala, first became sick, she hoped he would recover quickly.

But day after day, his condition worsened.

He developed swelling in his limbs, stopped eating, and became weak from vomiting and diarrhea. For two months, Imam carried him from clinic to clinic around her village searching for help.

Finally, she was told there was one place that might be able to save him:

The Mother of Mercy Referral Teaching Hospital in the Nuba Mountains.

Getting him to MMRTH would be dangerous and difficult...

For more than 20 years, Celina lived with fistula, a condition she developed during the delivery of her first child. What followed were years marked by loss, failed surgeries, and the daily reality of constant leakage. The condition brought deep stigma and affected how she saw herself, yet she continued to endure, returning to her parents’ home and supporting herself through subsistence farming.

Over time, she stopped seeking care. After two decades of unsuccessful procedures and the cost of trying to find treatment, she had come to believe healing was no longer possible. Still, she found ways to move forward, even building a small home of her own so she could live with a sense of independence and privacy.

In 2025, after hearing about a screening led by our partners at Rwibaale Hospital, she decided to try one more time. Thanks to your support, she underwent surgery, successfully. For the first time in decades, Celina is no longer living with the condition that had shaped so much of her life, and with that, a sense of dignity returned.

The people of the Nuba Mountains have endured incredible hardship.

Many have lost loved ones due to war and deprivation.

But what stands out to Dr. Tom is their resilience...the way they continue caring for their families and communities despite so much tragedy.

African Mission Healthcare is closely monitoring the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the more recently reported cases in Uganda.

In response, we are working with a trusted missionary partner and supporting two mission hospitals in Bunia and Nyankunde, DRC, that continue to care for vulnerable communities in regions impacted by the outbreak. During public health emergencies such as this, trusted local hospitals often become an essential frontline of care, providing treatment, screening, stabilization, and ongoing access to critical health services for surrounding communities. AMH is arranging the shipment of personal protective equipment (PPE), pharmaceuticals, and other critical medical supplies, while also providing immediate financial support so the hospitals can source locally available materials and equipment as needed.

While the same strain of Ebola has been reported in Uganda, no cases have been reported at our partner hospitals, and all of our teams and personnel remain safe.

Please join us in praying for the patients, healthcare workers, missionaries, and communities affected by this outbreak, and for wisdom, protection, and endurance for those serving on the front lines.

Dr Tom was once asked: "What's a medical decision you've had to make that still stays with you?"

He recalled a time when three patients arrived with a fatal disease.
The hospital had enough medication to treat only one.
Due to conflict and heavy rains, no additional supplies could reach them...

One patient survived. Two did not.

These are the realities of practicing medicine where resources are limited and why access to care matters so deeply.
