Our skate park story began due to an unforeseen tragic accident at Hocking Hills State Park which resulted in the death of local skate legend Alex Colson. Alex was a New Albany High School graduate from the Class of 2014, and well known throughout the Columbus area as one of the best and most talented skateboarders in the area. Alex began skateboarding in his driveway at 5 years old, and skated almost daily until his death at the age of 22.
However, he will be remembered and missed for so much more than his incredible skating skills. Alex influenced so many others in his short life. He mentored all ages of skaters by giving them his time, expertise, and most of all friendship. He taught by example that everybody matters- no matter their age, s*x, background, race, experience level or s*xual orientation. He taught others to be proud of themselves, and not let society’s misunderstood “delinquent” perception of skating influence their own self-image and identity. Alex heroically accepted everyone, including at-risk kids and young adults that no one else believed in, and helped others become more open minded about the skating community.
Those of us who had the pleasure of knowing Alex describe him as the “kindest”, “sincerest”, and “most genuine person” we knew. Alex was to so many a “safe zone” where you could go anytime, be welcomed, be yourself, and be accepted in a world that can be so judgmental. His leaving us too soon has created a hole in the lives of Alex’s friends and family.
Our motivation for forming this committee, is to honor Alex by creating a space that is welcoming, safe, all inclusive, and social for our current community of skaters and future generations to come. The Alex Colson Skate Park will be our way to pay it forward what Alex practiced and taught us. With guidance from the Tony Hawk Skate Park Foundation, and working closely with the Parks and Recreation department, the city, and the community- we believe we can continue the positive movement that role model Alex Colson was known for and achieve our goal of a community skate park.
