The New Year is here — and BTAC is stepping into something historic.

For the first time ever, the National Black Trans Advocacy Conference & Awards Gala is moving away from Texas — and we’re thrilled to announce:

BTAC26 is headed to New Orleans (April 21–26, 2026)!

Our vibe for the year + conference week is:
Theme: Rooted Liberation: The Big Easy Journey to Peace Within & Freedom Together
Theme Color: Crimson Red (renewal • strength • transformation)
Accent Color: Citrine (abundance • joy • creativity)

Every year on or around 20th November trans people worldwide gather for the Transgender Day of Remembrance to remember those we have lost to violence in the past year. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

There are 58 transgender and gender non-conforming people on one specific list, 46 of whom died by violence in the US, and 281 across the globe from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. The number of individuals on these lists can vary because some lists focus on violence, while others may include those who died by su***de or are not as widely reported.
