Today in History: Victory in Europe Day â May 8, 1945
On this day, 80 years ago, World War II ended in Europe. For Slovakia, it marked the fall of fascist rule and the beginning of liberation after years of suffering, resistance, and occupation. Slovak partisans had bravely risen up in the Slovak National Uprising of 1944, standing against tyranny even in the face of brutal repression.
As we remember the end of the war, we honor the resilience of the Slovak people, the sacrifices made for freedom, and the enduring hope for peace.
