Conway native Sydney Goldfinch graduated in 1929 and headed to Columba Bible College in Columbia, SC. After graduating in 4 years Sydney went to graduate school at Wheaton College, finishing his academic work at Southern Baptist Seminary. He married Frances McCaw in the lobby of Columbia Bible College on Christmas Day 1936. Sydney Goldfinch was ordained at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. Today Tabernacle Baptist is called North Trenholm Baptist. While attending Columbia Bible College Sydney desired to go into mission work and had hoped to go to China but due to the pressing need of missionaries in South America, he and his wife were off to Uruguay in July 1939. After 5 years in Uruguay, he was sent to Asuncion the capitol city of Paraguay. When the Goldfinch's arrived in Paraguay there was only 1 Baptist church. In a short time, there were 3 Baptist churches, and a new hospital had been built.

The photo is of the Goldfinch family taken in 1955. Mrs. Goldfinch is holding 8-month-old Lura. Mr. Goldfinch holds 3-year-old James Lee. Sitting on the sofa are Lanny who was a freshman at Carson Newman College in Pre-Med and Lelia an 8th grader at Wardlaw Junior High. Standing behind the sofa is Louis, a junior at Columbia High and sitting on the floor is Larue, a 3rd grader at Crayton Elementary.
