🌟 Masterpiece Monday 🌟

Meet “Iron Mike,” the American Doughboy Statue that proudly stands on the median at Whaley & Wayne Streets. Sculpted by E.M. Viquesney and installed in 1930, this historic treasure honors World War One veterans from the Olympia and Granby Villages.

What makes this masterpiece even more remarkable? It was funded through the heartfelt efforts of mill workers who came together to raise money for the statue, its pedestal, and its installation. Dedicated on November 11, 1930, this tribute reflects a community’s gratitude and resilience during a pivotal moment in history.

The plaque bears the names of eleven veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice, while the rear of the pedestal lists all those who served—black and white—from the Olympia-Granby community.

Next time you’re in the area, take a moment to visit and reflect on the stories of bravery, unity, and history embodied in this piece.

Watch out for deer crossing on Olympia Avenue between Carolina and Heyward Streets. The herd travels the Rocky Branch Creek at Olympia Park to the Congaree River.

With clocks "falling back" for daylight saving time, it's important for drivers to use caution on the roads.

Most vehicle collisions occur near dawn and dusk because deer tend to move more during these times. With fall days getting shorter, these are also the times that most people commute to and from work.

We encourage everyone to drive safely and watch out for white-tails! 🩌

The SCDOT Mill District Forum was well attended and established the District’s transportation safety needs. Thank you to our State Representative Seth Rose for arranging the meeting and securing funding for the realignment of the dangerous intersection of Heyward, Wayne and Olympia!!

Residents along with SCDOT and state and local lawmakers talk about what will make traffic better in the area and what other things are needed in the area.
