Sustain SC’s Sustainability Leadership Initiative Class Five fellows met this week in Orangeburg for their fifth and final session focused on sustainable forestry and agriculture held at Mixon Seed Service. On the first day, the fellows were given a forestry overview and heard from Trip Chavis, CEO of Milliken Advisors, about threats, opportunities and the future of the forestry industry. They then traveled together to a forestry field session where they experienced real-world forestry and agriculture operations and participated in a forestry certification exercise to deepen their understanding of the certification process.

The second day of the session featured a panel discussion about sustainable agriculture featuring experts including Antron Williams, owner of Mahogany Farms, and Robert Etheridge, President of Mixon Seed Service. Fellows then engaged in a session led by Nature at Work’s Susan Johnson, focused on the importance of nature restoration and the role it plays in employee health and wellbeing.

Thank you to Mixon Seed Service for your hospitality, expertise and generous support of the SLI program.

It’s ! Meet Jenna Wyatt, Advanced Sustainability Analyst at Milliken & Company, a global diversified manufacturer that produces specialty chemicals, performance and protective textiles, floor coverings and healthcare products. For Milliken & Company, sustainability is integral across their areas of business as shown in their corporate sustainability commitments and reporting.

When reflecting on the fourth SLI session focused on Energy and Emissions, Jenna mentioned that touring Lockhart Power Company’s hydroelectric plant was a key highlight for her. Jenna said, “Seeing a 100+ year-old hydropower installation still operating today underscored the long-term reliability and resilience of renewable energy infrastructure and its low life-cycle carbon emissions relative to fossil fuel power.”

Throughout the program, Jenna has enjoyed the opportunity to learn alongside and build relationships with a diverse group of leaders from across South Carolina. Jenna said, “Each [fellow] brings unique perspectives on embedding sustainability within their organizations and communities, and this cross-sector collaboration has been the most rewarding aspect of the program for me.”
