📣 Today we're announcing our 2026 Sustainability Symposium keynote!

Together we'll dig into one of South Carolina's most consequential conversations — the future of our working lands. 🌲

Robert Bonnie, Founder of Sage Agronomics and former USDA Undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment, will provide a keynote on economic development, forestry and agriculture in South Carolina — exploring how preserving working lands strengthens our economy, supports rural communities and serves as a core conservation strategy.

Rooftop solar. Battery storage. Microgrids. In our August newsletter, we're unpacking how these smaller-scale energy resources, located closer to the homes and businesses they serve, are quietly reshaping how South Carolina keeps the lights on.

The good news? South Carolina isn't starting from zero. Utilities, businesses, developers and public-sector partners are already exploring and implementing programs that put these distributed energy resources, or DERs, to work.

The real opportunity now is scaling them in a way that supports reliability, affordability and economic growth — which will take continued coordination, customer education, policy clarity and practical tools.

It's SLI ! Meet Megan Copsey, part of the Environmental Management team at BMW Plant Spartanburg — the largest BMW manufacturing facility in the world!

Megan's team handles environmental compliance and sustainability for the plant, and she's found real value in the SLI program's mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience.

One highlight? A field trip to a sustainably managed forestry tract, where she learned to spot the difference between land managed with controlled burns versus chemical treatment.

In her words: "I am already recommending SLI to others because I think the program provides a great opportunity to learn more about environmental sustainability topics within our state while also providing the names and faces that go with them."

Today, we're spotlighting Sustain SC member, the Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA), an economic development alliance serving Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties in South Carolina. CRDA serves as a catalyst for long-term regional prosperity by attracting the world’s best companies, talent, and entrepreneurs.

CRDA advances sustainability by prioritizing responsible and intentional growth, workforce housing preservation and industry recruitment aligned with long-term regional resilience. Current initiatives include supporting the Charleston Workforce Housing Fund, promoting infill and redevelopment when appropriate, and recruiting advanced manufacturing, energy and technology companies that emphasize environmental stewardship. Long-term, CRDA aims to integrate sustainability considerations into business recruitment, regional planning, and data-driven decision-making to support inclusive economic growth.

For CRDA, sustainability is essential to ensuring the Charleston region remains competitive, livable, and resilient over the long term. Sustain SC is hosting the 2026 Circularity Summit on Tuesday, August 18 at EdVenture Children’s Museum in Columbia. This isn't just another conference. It's a working session bringing together manufacturers, recyclers and haulers, local government leaders, state agencies and nonprofit partners to move South Carolina's circular economy forward — with real case studies, practical next steps and a group effort to define what "circularity" means for our state.

It's SLI ! 🌱 Meet Sam Packard, an EHS Professional at Siemens, where he supports environmental compliance and sustainability projects like zero waste and decarbonization at the company's Spartanburg facilities.

As an early-career professional, Sam loved getting to collaborate with fellows across industries on hypothetical sustainability projects. His favorite part of the whole program? The field sessions — from the island tour to the MRF visit — that let him experience these topics firsthand, instead of just in the classroom.
"Sustainability as a practice is inherently collaborative," Sam said, "and SLI gives the opportunity for collaboration with like-minded sustainability professionals across a variety of industries to try and address challenges both in the office and in the field."
