Tutaweza: Confidence in the Future

Tutaweza: Confidence in the Future Tutaweza is a US-based non-profit organization that provides academic scholarships to rural Tanzania

Tutaweza, a Swahili word that means 'confidence in the future,' was inspired by a volunteer trip that the founders made in 2001. As a result of their experiences in rural Tanzania, as well as the relationships they built during that time, Kay and Lynn felt it was imperative to stay involved and try to improve the educational prospects for impoverished but promising Tanzanian youth. Tutaweza curren

tly supports approximately 17 boys and girls. The academic scholarships include tuition fees, room, and board costs. Tutaweza participants are required to maintain satisfactory grades and send letters about their coursework, progress, and general school life to the organization throughout the year. Tutaweza, partnered with the Vitamin Angels organization, has recently begun supporting a micronutrient program in southwestern Tanzania as well to try to tackle the epidemic of infant and childhood Vitamin A deficiency within the community.

Our Story

Tutaweza, a Swahili word that means “confidence in the future,” was inspired by a volunteer trip that the founders made in 2001. As a result of their experiences in rural Tanzania, as well as the relationships they built during that time, Kay and Lynn Stricklan felt it was imperative to stay involved and try to improve the educational prospects for impoverished but promising Tanzanian youth. Because of many faithful donors around the world and the dedication of our in-country partner, Andrew Mbughi, Tutaweza is able to support approximately 18 boys and girls in secondary schools and vocational training programs each year. Tutaweza participants are required to maintain satisfactory grades and send letters about their coursework, progress, and general school life to the organization throughout the year. Besides offering scholarships, Tutaweza has partnered with the Vitamin Angels organization and offered a micronutrient and Vitamin A program in southwestern Tanzania. A partnership between Tutaweza and Mbeya University of Science and Technology led to the establishment of a Raspberry Pi Computer Lab that benefits both teachers and students. Tutaweza has also been able to donate several computers and offer training at Oswe Girl’s Secondary School and James Sangu Secondary School for Girls near Vwawa, Tanzania.
