Our chapter meeting October 1st with Tim Siegmund was packed full of great information. I just wish I could transfer all of his knowledge straight to my brain. Tim’s presentation reminds us how fortunate we are to have such an outstanding TPWD biologist serving our community and the state of Texas.

TONIGHT!

You are invited to the Post Oak Native Plant Society of Texas chapter meeting to hear Tim Siegmund speak on “Prairies, Restoration and Observations in Brazos Valley Over the Last 17 Years”. Tim is a Regulatory Biologist at TPWD and will share his observations and experiences in our area. We will meet at the Gary Halter Nature Center at Lick Creek Park with meet and greet at 6pm, presentation 6:30- 7:30 pm. Hope to see you there!

Buffalo gourd (Cucurbita foetidissima). Curcurbitaceae-Gourd Family. Robertson County.

The triangular leaves are up to a foot in length & the vines can spread 10-20 feet. This perennial is adapted to the drier environments of the American southwest. The mature gourds are slightly larger than a tennis ball.

The fruits of the American persimmon tree (Diospyros virginiana) are beginning to ripen. This species often has good fall color and the edible fruits are consumed by humans and a wide variety of wildlife including birds, deer, opossums, raccoons and even coyotes!

The tree is a member of the Ebenaceae-the Ebony & Persimmon Family.

Edit #2: The additional photo added at the end shows that the stigma clearly extends well past the surrounding anthers so these are Traub's rain lilies (Zephyranthes traubii) rather than Brazos rain lilies. Traub's rain lilies are also taller than Brazos rain lilies.

Brazos Rain Lilies (Zephyranthes chlorosolen) are popping up after the recent rains.

Edit: After posting I noticed that the stigma protrudes past the anthers on some of the flowers which could mean that these are Traub's rain lilies (Z. traubii) rather than Brazos rain lilies. I don't believe that the stigma protrudes far enough to be Traub's but I will go back and check the flowers again.
