Stay safe and warm, College Point! ❄️ As we gear up for this next storm, let’s look out for one another and keep our neighborhood safe and accessible. Being College Point Strong means more than just weathering the storm—it’s about how we help each other out.
🏠 NYC Snow Removal Rules
In NYC, timing is everything. If the snow stops between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, you have 4 hours to clear your sidewalk. If it stops in the evening, you have until the next morning. Remember to clear a path at least 4 feet wide for strollers and neighbors using wheelchairs. Also, please keep our fire hydrants clear—every second counts for the FDNY! Important: It is illegal to shovel snow into the street; let’s keep our narrow roads like 14th Ave clear for the plows.
🛡️ Shoveling Safety & Health
Shoveling is a serious workout, so treat it like one! Warm up and stretch before you start to prevent muscle strain. When moving snow, try to push instead of lift. If you must lift, bend at the knees and use your legs, not your back. Most importantly, listen to your body. If you feel chest pain or shortness of breath, stop immediately. Dress in layers and keep your mouth covered to protect your lungs from the freezing air.
🧂 The "Salt" Strategy
For the best results, shovel first and salt second. Salt works best when it’s directly on the pavement, not sitting on top of a foot of snow. You only need about a tablespoon of rock salt per sidewalk square. If possible, use "Pet Safe" ice melt (Magnesium Chloride) to protect the paws of our local furry friends walking down to MacNeil Park.
🤝 Look Out for Each Other
Let’s keep the College Point Strong spirit alive. If you have an elderly neighbor or someone with a disability on your block, please check in on them. A little bit of help goes a long way in keeping our 11356 community safe.
