Vote for local control. Vote no on the 50% property tax cut .
You might be thinking it, I’m gonna say it. If you are in favor of the 50% property tax cut, and you have not served on a local board, or committee you are lazy, and you are part of the problem.
The Wyoming State Legislature set up a system long ago that puts the power in the hands of the people, the local governments. In every town, in every community and in every county there are LOCAL boards that decide how to spend property tax dollars. Each and every year they present budgets, those budgets have hundreds of man hours involved with town councils, community college boards, conservation districts, and Cemetary boards, working towards fiscally conservative budgets that are approved by your friends and neighbors. If you believe there is waste in local governments, here’s your opportunity, get involved, run for your local rec district or fire district. Lower those budgets, in turn, your property taxes will go down.
“The most effective, responsible, and responsive government is the government that is closest to the People. Government that governs least governs best.”
This is copied from plank 14 of the Republican Party platform. This, in and of itself, tells you how you lean if you vote for the property tax reduction this election season. Especially if you vote for the reduction, and you have never served on a local board, been to a budget session, or requested your neighbor on the fire district board to lower their budget.
The minute you fill in that circle on your ballot saying yes, you are marking your dot in history as sending our local control to the state level. Stripping it straight out of the hands of local control. The Cody Volunteer Fire department will no longer set their mills levied locally, someone on a state board will give them their allowance. The Meeteetse Rec district, nope, no more local control. The Powell Cemetary boards local control, gone.
Long story short, if you haven’t served on a local board, or if you haven’t been to a local boards budget session and suggested a cut in the budget, yet you vote in favor of the property tax 50% reduction. You are LAZY! You are part of the problem! And you are voting in direct conflict of plank 14 of the Wyoming Republican Party platform.
Bottom line, do you part, get involved. Don’t just be a lazy ^$$ and vote to reduce property tax because you have never tried to make a difference locally.
Monday night musings trying to get you thinking! Adios for now Park County!
