BREAKING NEWS! Partial Restoration of Pensacola’s “Our Confederate Dead” Monument: A Bittersweet Victory Amid Leftist Iconoclasm
After more than six years in storage following its shameful 2020 removal, a key portion of Pensacola’s historic Confederate monument—the cenotaph base—is finally seeing the light of day once again. This granite cenotaph, the dignified foundation inscribed with tributes to the “Uncrowned Heroes of the Southern Confederacy,” is being placed in historic St. John’s Cemetery, near the grave of Confederate Brigadier General Edward Aylesworth Perry. It is a small but meaningful step toward preserving the memory of Southern valor in a city that once honored it proudly. 
The full monument, erected in 1891 in what was then Lee Square, stood as a towering tribute to local sons who answered the call to defend their homes, families, and constitutional principles against invasion.
At nearly 50 feet tall, it featured an 8-foot statue of a Confederate soldier atop a granite shaft from Richmond, Virginia—the former Confederate capital—honoring Jefferson Davis, Stephen R. Mallory, and especially General Perry himself.
Perry, a northerner born in Massachusetts who adopted Florida as his home, exemplified true conviction. He recognized that the South stood as the rightful heir to the Founding Fathers’ principles of states’ rights, limited government, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. Casting his lot with his adopted state, he rose to command Florida’s brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia, later serving as Florida’s governor and championing the monument’s creation.
His burial in St. John’s Cemetery makes this partial return profoundly fitting. 
Yet this “restoration” rings hollow and cruel. The left’s Mao-Marxist ideologues on the Pensacola City Council, in their rush to appease the George Floyd/BLM mob in 2020, tore down a 129-year-old memorial funded privately by those who lost loved ones in America’s bloodiest war. They prioritized a career criminal thug over the honorable sacrifices of Pensacola’s own dead war veterans—men who fought to protect their homeland from coercion, as countless primary sources and soldiers’ letters attest.
We warned them then: BLM was a scam built on lies, riots, and enrichment schemes for its founders, while Floyd’s record spoke for itself. The council chose feelings, virtue-signaling, and leftist pressure over truth and local heritage.
The soldier statue remains displaced or sidelined, ensuring the monument can never stand whole again. This bastardized fragment is no substitute for the original beauty that once graced the square. 
This episode exposes the left’s pattern of destruction: past generations built enduring monuments of granite and honor; today’s radicals leave only ruin, destruction, and ugliness in their wake.
While the memorial should have been fully restored, we commend St. John’s Cemetery for stepping up where the city failed, offering a respectful home beside Perry and other Confederate veterans. At least this cenotaph can now stand in hallowed ground, a quiet witness to truth amid the cultural vandalism.
Southerners and all lovers of honest history will remember this: the left tears down; we preserve. The spirit of those “Uncrowned Heroes” endures in the hearts of those who refuse to let their legacy be forgotten. -RJ
