Running for local office can feel intimidating at first, but the filing process is often much simpler than people expect.

For many local positions, candidates are generally required to complete a small set of forms and submit petition signatures to the appropriate clerk.

Common documents may include:

🧾Statement of Organization
•Campaign Finance Document

🪪Affidavit of Identity
•Notarized form verifying candidate information

📝Candidate Petition
•Used to gather signatures from registered voters supporting placement on the ballot
•Only 6-20 signatures required for Clinton’s 2026 open local seats

🗓️Filing Deadline
•Tuesday, July 21st
*Please note, Clinton Twp clerk hours MWF 9a-12p, closed T/Th

It is important to remember that filing requirements, deadlines, signature totals, and procedures can vary depending on the office being sought.
For the most accurate and up to date information, prospective candidates should contact:
•Clinton Township Clerk for Village Council, SKCC
•Lenawee County Clerk for CCS School Board

Candidates do not need to and should not wait until the deadline to begin the process or submit paperwork.

One of the biggest misconceptions about local government is that you need special experience, political background or even connections to serve your community.

In reality, many local offices simply require candidates to:
✔️Be a U.S. Citizen
✔️Be registered to vote
✔️Meet local residency requirements
✔️Complete the required filing paperwork

Different boards have different residency requirements:
🏠Village residents may run for Village Council & Smith Kimball Community Center positions
✏️Residents within the Clinton Community School District may run for School Board
📚Clinton Township residents may run for Library Board & Township Board positions
(Please note: Library filing deadline has passed, Township Board positions not open until 2028)

Most local boards meet only 1-2 times per month, making service more accessible for working individuals, parents and community members with busy schedules.

If you are interested in running, upcoming posts will walk through the filing process and important deadlines. Prospective candidates are also encouraged to contact the appropriate clerk’s office for official guidance and requirements.

What local positions are open in the Clinton Community this year?

Several nonpartisan local offices will appear on the 2026 ballot, giving residents an opportunity to directly shape decisions impacting our community.

OPEN POSITIONS INCLUDE:

Village Council
• 3 positions open
• 4 year terms

Clinton Community School Board
• 2 full term positions
• 6 year terms
• 1 partial term position (through 2028)

Smith Kimball Community Center
• 3 positions
• 3 year terms

Clinton Township Public Library
• 1 partial term (through 2028)
• 4 year terms
• *Filing Deadline has passed (sharing library information for educational purposes)

Most local boards and councils typically meet just 1-2 times per month, though occasional additional meetings or committee work may arise depending on projects or community needs.

These boards help make decisions that impact daily life in very real ways; from community programs and public services to local policies and long term planning.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue sharing information including but not limited to:
✔️ Candidate Requirements
✔️ How to Run for Office
✔️ Filing Deadlines
✔️ Participation in local government
✔️ Understanding your ballot

As always, prospective candidates should contact the appropriate clerk’s office for official filing information and requirements.
