Guten Tag Legionaries and Friends!
With considerable sadness, we announce that this is the last posting of ClintonPost56, Vol I. Burt Harter recently declined to run as Post 56 Historian and Administrator of this page.
Some months, this page had over 4000 hits and hundreds of followers. It is hoped they found our attempts to be informative, perhaps educational, and even humorous.
The official 2024-5 History Record Scrapbook of American Legion Copeland-Davidson Post 56 will soon be handed over to the permanent collection of the local history room of the Laurens County Library.
Denise Harter was recently selected as the South Carolina American Legion Auxiliary Public Relations Chairperson. She will be assisted by her 50-year partner, Burt (she noted she could not afford a real emotional companion dog). They are looking forward to new challenges.
Post 56 elected to change the post of Historian to an optional position to be selected by Post 56 Executives on a as needed basis. Hopefully, ClintonPost56, Vol. II, will be coming soon.
Had a great time, Tschuss!

The Post 56 Auxiliary Poppy Ladies landed again, this time on National Poppy Day, May 23rd, at the Clinton YMCA and Clinton Wilson's Market. Poppy ladies Debra Valiante, Denise Harter, and Sue Taylor accepted donations for the traditional, prison veteran made, paper lapel poppy. They also had a variety of larger, handmade boutonnieres and table decorations. Together, they raised over $200 under the motto "Service, not Self."

The Poppy Ladies Strike Again!
This time they read The Poppy Book to a roomful of very well behaved second graders at Clinton Elementary School. For details on the program, scroll down and read yesterday's East Elementary event description or in this week's The Laurens County Buzz--On the Move.
Then the photographer promised not to send the picture to their parents and for the next shot they could all be silly. Never tell The Poppy Ladies, or second graders, it is OK to be silly!
The program was a great success.

Great write-up in today's The Laurens County Buzz--On The Move. Way to go Poppy Lady! Better story than what we posted below!

American Legion Post 56 Auxiliary Sargeant-At-Arms Deb Valiante, also known as the Poppy Lady, read the Poppy Book to all four second grades classes at Clinton’s East Elementary School on May 19th. Reading from Barbara E. Walsh’s seminal children’s book, Valiante traced the 100-year history of the memorial poppy symbol back to the Flander’s Fields battles of World War One. She noted that the Legion will be distributing Poppies and celebrating Poppy Day this Friday, May23, at the Clinton YMCA in the morning and Wilson Market in the afternoon. The school’s program led by Director of Federal Programs Eddie Mashall, and classes from Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Brewington, Mrs. Price, and Miss Strange all enjoyed the presentation. Mrs. Wilson, Principal.

COLUMBIA, SC—American Legion Auxiliary State Americanism Chairperson Gloria Bonet- Leigh cited the recent Clinton Chronicle’s almost full-page promotion and coverage of the Americanism Essay Contest. She stated that this was a preeminent example of the partnering efforts of Clinton’s Unit 56 with local media to promote Americanism programs. This honor took place at the 104th Annual American Legion Auxiliary Department of South Carolina Convention and was witnessed by over 100 Legion Auxiliary representatives from across the state.
Chairperson Bonet-Leigh also noted that, besides the newspaper’s continuous support, Sargeant-At-Arms Deb Valiante and former Unit 56 Secretary Denise Harter were also instrumental in organizing, promoting, and participation in many Americanism programs including parades, disadvantaged youth’s Christmas party, Vietnam Veterans and Geraldine’s Soup Kitchen Breakfast, Laurens County Hall of Heroes ceremonies, Veteran’s Last Patrol, Laurens County Historical Museum, Boys State and Girl’s State Banquets,, and other patriotic events and ceremonies. Valiante and Harter were both presented with Letters of Appreciation from the Americanism Committee.
During the Convention, Senior Vice President Beth Bryant was elected to President for 2025-2026 of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of South Carolina. She announced her selection of Clinton’s Post 56 Auxiliary Sargeant-At-Arms Deb Valiante to Chair the state’s Americanism Committee. She has also selected Unit 56’s former Secretary Denise Harter to chair the Public Relations Committee. She will be assisted by Post 56’s former Historian Burt Harter.

At the 4th Annual "Veterans Last Patrol" fund raising dinner at Greer City Hall on April 15, 2025, Board of Directors Member John "JT" Davis spotted the 56th Brigade Pershing crest on Post 56 Historian's Burt Harter's shooter's vest. Although serving 10 years apart, they were both members of the small, and highly specialized, 1st BN/41st FA Pershing nuclear missile unit in Schwaebisch Gmuend, FRG. Davis shared updates as he recently returned to Germany and toured Ralf Stumpf's 56th Brigade Cold War Museum in neighboring Bismark Kaserne,
"In the last 52 years since I left," said Harter, "this is the first time I have run into a Pershing Redleg from Hardt Kaserne. We said it together: QRA, Mission Accomplished, Sir!"
Other local upstate area Legionnaires who attend included Eric Valiante and Kevin Myer, and Auxiliary members Debra Valiante, Donna King, and Denise Harter.
