Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honors Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, as an historic moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, marking the true beginning of freedom for all.

We proudly recognize the efforts of our own trailblazing Soror, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” whose unwavering advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday in 2021.

Today, we celebrate emancipation, reflect on our ancestors’ strength and resilience, and recommit to the work of advancing justice, equity, and unity. Through education, action, and solidarity, we move closer to a world rooted in true freedom for all.

Soror Dizena Smith serves as the secretary and a member of the media team for the Beta Alpha Epsilon Zeta Chapter. Her vibrant personality and uplifting spirit light up every room she enters, bringing joy and positivity to those around her. Beyond her many contributions, Soror Smith is also known as the chapter’s source of joy and laughter. There is never a dull moment when she is around.

A dedicated Pre-K teacher and Choir President at her church, Soror Smith exemplifies leadership, faith, and service both in and out of the classroom. Known as the chapter’s “ideas person,” she consistently brings creativity and vision to life, playing a key role in planning impactful programs. She is also a proud member of the Harlem Pearls.

Join us on April 25, 2026 as she showcases her leadership as Chairperson for the Women of the Bible Program.
