It can be the smallest of things that change the way a person remembers a death.
This photo shows the cot from Cook Family Funeral Home when they came to take a guest of ours into their care. Their standard cot cover is a sheet…. that is the standarD!! There is no vinyl shroud aka plastic bag aka body bag….

Working with a new funeral home can be anxiety inducing as we start to explain to them that our person is shrouded and we don’t permit plastic bags in the house. Some funeral home have refused to take our person, others argue with us, and many are open to learning. Allison and Tim didn’t bat an eye- they told us we were ok and to keep advocating with other funeral homes.
When Tim came to the house he was so kind and tender with our guest and genuinely wanted to honour her wishes. For people who have lost a love, interactions and care like this can change the way grief lives forward.
We need more places like this. Thank you Allison and Tim for caring for our self proclaimed, future toasty marshmallow.

It was on this day one year ago that we lost The Great Andrea Gibson, former poet laureate of Colorado, who died after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer. Andrea interpreted human experience, wielded words, and wove wisdom in the plainest of ways. Profound insight and meaning became available to us all because Andrea just handed it over like a receipt. By which I do NOT mean their work was simple or easy – I mean the opposite. Andrea’s genius was making the complex comprehendible, the etherial visible, and resolving paradoxes into balanced equations. Andrea’s poem “Love Letter From the Afterlife” went viral in the hours after they died. I thought it appropriate to share it on this one year anniversary of their death.
