If primary medicine caretakers speak as a group, “things can change for the better,” said Dr. Constance Magoulias, a geriatric medicine physician at MetroHealth. She knows a MetroHealth family medicine physician on the verge of resigning because of a heavy patient load.

“We’re all exhausted asking for more support,” Magoulias said.

A majority of eligible primary care employees have signed union cards, seeking longer patient appointments and improved retention efforts to address what they describe as exhausting workloads.

“We know what happens when providers do have time,” Heather de la Pena, APRN-CNP said. “Outcomes improve, patients feel heard, families feel supported and communities become healthier.”

MetroHealth primary care providers and their supporters held a rally outside the hospital, Tuesday evening, saying they want to unionize to protect providers and patients.

"We are here because primary care works best when it is built on trust," said Dr. David Ritzenthaler, a MetroHealth primary care physician who spoke at the rally. "But too often, decisions about scheduling, staffing, workloads and patient care are being made without enough input from the people that actually provide the care.”

MetroHealth's primary care providers are rallying to form a union, citing burnout and scheduling pressures they say compromise patient care.
