Statement from Hilary Jackson-
Thursday, May 21st
This morning, I received multiple messages from parents, staff members, and community stakeholders regarding the possibility of the Parma City School District considering the re-employment of Jill Schissler as a gym teacher after previously accepting her resignation. Many of these individuals have begged me to “do something.”
The truth is, there is nothing more I can do beyond what I have already done- which is share the concerns, stories, and perspectives that members of this community have asked me to bring to light.
From the outside looking in, this district has developed a troubling pattern of punishing its stakeholders rather than listening to them. Whether through the behavior and comments of members of the board, the superintendent, or the treasurer, it increasingly appears that the Board of Education is no longer functioning as the voice of the community, but rather as the mouthpiece of the district administration.
Time and time again, this district has chosen to blame and shame members of the community when they speak out. When levies fail, instead of accepting responsibility and working collaboratively toward solutions, leadership appears more focused on attacking critics and discouraging dissent.
The resolution posted for tonight’s meeting is yet another example of a district that seems uninterested in being part of the solution. Instead, it gives the impression of a leadership culture that seeks to rule with an iron fist- one that attempts to bully and traumatize people into submission until they are too intimidated to ever speak up again.
I encourage anyone affected by this decision to attend tonight’s board meeting and speak. The end result may not be what you desire, but the board needs to see that we, as parents and community members, will never stop fighting to protect our children from anyone and everyone - especially from those who have already caused harm.
My role in this situation involving the Parma City School District has been completed. My job has always been to educate and empower the public by sharing information and amplifying concerns that deserve to be heard.
It is now the responsibility of the community to advocate for your children, your schools, and the standards you are willing to accept and tolerate.
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this decision.
