Today, we pause to honor the memory of our brother, Patrol Officer Phillip Patrick Maher #988.

Assigned to the 6th District (now the 5th District), Officer Maher was a beloved figure at Lakeshore Blvd. and East 152nd Street, where he crossed students for Memorial and St. Jerome Schools.

His final actions epitomized heroism. Right before his crossing shift, he ran to assist a man in a serious motorcycle crash, moving him to safety and waiting until medical help arrived. Officer Maher managed to return to his post in time to protect the children, but tragically collapsed shortly after. He was taken to Euclid Hospital, where he passed away.

A proud 26-year veteran of the Cleveland Police, Officer Maher’s legacy lives on at "Maher Square"—the intersection renamed in his honor.

During National Police Week, we pause to honor the memory of Patrol Officer William Nagy #1625.

On this day in 1971, Officer Nagy made the ultimate sacrifice when he walked into an active robbery at a restaurant near West 25th and Detroit. We will never forget his bravery or his service to our community.

Today, and every day, we remember.

Every April 26th, we pause to remember our Brother, Patrol Officer William Shapiro #2247, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in 1974.

Patrol Officer Shapiro’s life was defined by a profound commitment to service—not just to the city of Cleveland, but to our nation. Before donning the badge of the Cleveland Division of Police, Patrol Officer Shapiro proudly served in the United States Navy, carrying the discipline and honor of a sailor into his career in law enforcement.

His legacy of service did not end with his EOW. Today, that torch is carried forward by his son, who followed in his father's footsteps to serve as a Cleveland Police Officer. This dedication to protecting our community is a true family tradition.

We honor his memory, his military service, and the incredible family legacy that continues to impact us today.
