Project YESS

Project YESS Project YESS: Youth Empowered to Succeed through Sailing. All paid for by the Rotary Club.

YESS students complete training in seamanship, celestial navigation, water safety & environmental awareness then set sail for a week aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan. The Tall Ships Festival at the Port of Cleveland was sponsored by the Cleveland Rotary as a way to celebrate our club’s 100th anniversary. We know first hand the challenges that many young people face in our community and the positive r

esults achieved when these students are provided with strong role models and access to quality educational and leadership programs. Project YESS offers an opportunity for a cadre of youth that may lack the confidence, self-esteem, and drive to set and achieve ambitious goals and helps them chart a path that may lead to greater success and happiness. Participants attend a day-long leadership boot camp, followed by four land-based curriculum sessions addressing:
• Safety in and on the water
• Great Lakes ecosystem and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math)
• Seamanship and navigation
• Career relevance and commencement – a program which exposes participants to the unique career opportunities which exist upon the Great Lakes. Upon graduating from the land-base curriculum, our students experience a unique educational adventure: serving as working crew members of a tall ship on the Great Lakes for. YESS participants learn the importance of their role within a community while experiencing a world many never new existed.

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy!! If you are healthy & well, please considering giving blood. Your help is needed to overcome shortages for patients. Cleveland Rotarian Michael N. Parks, Rear Admiral USCG (ret.) is the CEO of the American Red Cross – Northern Ohio Region and needs our help as we are now facing a severe blood shortage. Here in the Northern Ohio Region, more than 300 blood drives have been canceled, resulting in approximately 8,500 fewer blood donations.

Check out redcrossblood.org for more information!

The American Red Cross continues to face a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak. To help meet the need, the AmericanRedcross and Cleveland Clinic have partnered with us to host a blood drive at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse this Friday, March 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App and entering code “Rocket” calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Donors MUST make an appointment before showing up to donate in order to manage the flow of donors appropriately in alignment with social distancing practices.

We know you are all aware of the current health issues surrounding COVID-19 in Ohio and the orders from Governor Mike DeWine and Dr. Amy Acton, Director of the Department of Health. Namely, groups of 50 or more are prohibited, and it is strongly suggested that we avoid non-family gatherings of more than ten people.

Because of these current conditions, the Project YESS Team and the Rotary Club of Cleveland have made the difficult decision to cancel Project YESS for 2020. We do not know if we can return to normalcy in the next few months, but we do not believe we can continue with our planning and your hard work only to have to cancel our sessions and sailing at the last minute. The YESS team wants to do what we can to keep everyone safe and healthy. We are grateful for the continued support of Captain Tiffany and our friends on the S/V Denis Sullivan and look forward to continuing our partnership next year.

We would like to do something to help the youth in the greater Cleveland area get through this time of isolation. Please help our team brainstorm about what we can do. Maybe we could collect school supplies for children who have nothing to use in their homes, etc. Feel free to email your ideas to us.

Again, we share your disappointment and hope to see you next year.
