Cuyahoga Land Bank

Cuyahoga Land Bank The most progressive entity in the country dedicated to eliminating vacant, blighted homes and properties and returning them to productive use.

The Land Bank works to advance Cuyahoga County's broad policy goals, within the prescribed perimeters of SB 353 - the State statute that allows for its existence. These goals include the revitalization of neighborhoods, the promotion of economic growth, and the creation of job and workforce development opportunities. The Land Bank is committed to the healthy, sustainable community redevelopment wi

thin Cuyahoga County. The Land Bank exhibits this ongoing commitment through efforts such as strategic blight clearance, deconstruction, the appropriate and innovative re-use of vacant land, and the use of energy efficient, green rehabilitation and new construction standards. As a non-profit government purposed entity, the Land Bank is empowered to help local governments foster effective land re-use. Put simply, the Land Bank has many of the same powers as a traditional government land bank so it can be extremely effective, but it is not hindered by as many of the traditional, bureaucratic government impediments. The net result of the structure is that it not only will be effective, but also efficient and strategic. The process of converting land to productive re-use is labor intensive and difficult in areas where there are distressed markets. But, such efforts may lead to job opportunities. Therefore, as part of its central focus, whenever feasible, the Land Bank looks to expand and create in-field job opportunities for those who need work, mindful of the many who may have some barriers to employment. Finally, through maximum collaboration with local governments, the Land Bank is positioned to promote and lift the profile of individual community priorities. This ability to cut through political boundaries, promotes regionalism and helps the collective community leverage and focus its precious resources on this important land re-use challenge rather than diluting them by spreading them too thinly and broadly.

Solar panel installation has been one of many green efforts the Land Bank Real Estate Development Team has used to increase its earth-friendly approach and decrease its carbon footprint on our region. The good news in NE Ohio is that solar panels don't need direct sunlight to work; they just need light. Clouds and overcast conditions don't block all sunlight and modern solar panel technology is much more efficient at capturing low-light conditions than older ones.

Cuyahoga Land Bank’s work is rooted in a simple but powerful mission: return distressed and abandoned properties to productive use. While renovation is often the preferred path, reality is that not every structure can (nor should) be saved. These cases are where strategic demolition becomes one of our more critical tools to stabilize neighborhoods, protect residents, and unlock future opportunities.

The demolition process is a very nuanced, delicate process. From the consideration of nearby properties to understanding the end use of the newly empty lot, the Land Bank team uses a step-by-step system to ensure the safety, cleanliness and proper care of a structure being removed. Watch as our Senior Demolition Inspector, Deidre Lightning-Whitted, takes you through a live demo.

In just one year, nearly 14 acres of land that held nearly 42,000 cubic yards of asbestos-ridden garbage have been wiped clean, remediated and prepared for economic development.

Not only does this important work clear an eyesore, crime hazard and illegal dumping ground from the community, but it also makes way for growth in the form of jobs, income and stability. Completed in partnership with Site Readiness Fund , Councilman Michael Polensek, City of Cleveland - City Hall, Ohio Department of Development and Ohio EPA . We look forward to seeing what comes next for this historic landmark spot.

PNC Market Manager for Community Development Jeff Verespej is a gem. Not only does he love our spread of sweets from bakeries across town (thank you very much Presti’s, Kelsey Elizabeth, Cafe Roig, Las Villas and Tous Les Jours), Jeff is a dedicated advocate for Cleveland’s and Cuyahoga County’s overall greatness - and he shares his professional and personal takes on this in the April Cuyahoga Bites episode.

Jeff’s professional background starts close to that of the Land Bank’s President & CEO Ricardo Leon - at a CDC, doing grassroots work to keep Cuyahoga County the incredibly special place it is. In this month’s episode, you’ll hear a passionate conversation between these two , fueled by both sugar and genuine dedication to our region.
