📚✨ Teaching Tip Tuesday | Small Groups. BIG Impact.

Small-group literacy instruction should never be just another rotation. When intentionally planned, it becomes one of our most powerful opportunities to meet scholars exactly where they are—and move them forward.

🎯 Standards tell us WHAT scholars need to learn.
📊 Data tells us WHERE scholars are in the learning.
👩🏽‍🏫 Intentional instruction determines HOW we move them forward.

Effective small groups are flexible, targeted, standards-aligned, and data-driven. Use assessment results, observations, student work, and progress-monitoring data to identify specific needs. Then teach with precision, check for understanding, analyze the results, and regroup as needed.

💡 This Week’s Teaching Tip:
Don’t group scholars simply by a label or overall reading level. Group by instructional need. One skill. One standard. One purposeful learning target. Then teach it well!

Right group. Right instruction. Right time. Right results. 💛

Because when we use data to respond—not merely report—we turn assessment into action and small-group time into an opportunity for BIG growth! 📈📖

🎭📚 THRIVING TOGETHER THURSDAY: LESSON PLANNING PLCs

What if we didn't just plan the lesson—but actually practiced it before we taught it? 💡
Role playing during Lesson Planning PLCs gives educators an opportunity to step into the roles of teacher, scholar, and observer to anticipate misconceptions, rehearse instructional strategies, refine questioning, practice differentiation, and strengthen delivery—all before the lesson reaches the classroom.

That's collaboration in action! 🤝
💙 We plan together.
💛 We practice together.
💙 We reflect together.
💛 We improve together.

Because effective planning isn't only about what's written on the page. It's about preparing educators to respond confidently and intentionally when teaching and learning come to life.

🎯 Practice today. Confident teaching tomorrow.
When educators sharpen one another, instruction gets stronger and scholars reap the benefits!

Strong readers don’t just read the words—they recognize how the ideas are organized! 📚🧠✨

Understanding text structure gives scholars a roadmap for making meaning. When readers recognize how an author organizes information, they are better equipped to identify important details, make connections, anticipate what comes next, and comprehend increasingly complex text.

🔄 Compare & Contrast — How are ideas alike and different?
➡️ Cause & Effect — What happened, and why did it happen?
🎨 Description — What details help create a clear picture?
💡 Problem & Solution — What challenge occurred, and how was it resolved?
🔢 Sequence — In what order did the events or steps occur?

Text structures aren't simply features to identify—they are comprehension tools that help scholars organize their thinking and understand what they read.

Recognize the structure. Organize the thinking. Strengthen comprehension. 💙💛

In Loving Memory of Dolly Parton
January 19, 1946 – August 25, 2026

The Mississippi Literacy Association joins millions of people around the world in mourning the passing of beloved country music icon, humanitarian, and literacy champion Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s remarkable voice brought joy to generations, but her heart for children and literacy created a legacy that will endure far beyond the music. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, she placed books into the hands of young readers, nurtured a love of learning, strengthened families, and helped children believe that their dreams were possible.
Although the final page of Dolly’s earthly story has turned, her legacy will live on in every book delivered, every child inspired, and every dream awakened through the gift of reading.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, the Imagination Library community, and the countless people around the world who share in this tremendous sorrow.
Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the memories, the generosity, and the millions of beautiful stories you helped begin. Your light will continue to shine—one child, one book, and one page at a time.

With heartfelt sympathy and enduring gratitude,
The Mississippi Literacy Association

💡📚 Wisdom Wednesday: COMPREHENSION

Reading is more than saying the words on the page—the ultimate goal is understanding what we read. Every literacy component we teach—phonics, vocabulary, fluency, language, writing, background knowledge, and strategic thinking—works together to move scholars toward deeper comprehension. 🧠✨

Because when scholars comprehend, they don't just read—they connect, learn, think, and grow.
Strong foundations. Deep understanding. Bright futures. 💙💛

Teaching Tip Tuesday | Words Matter!

Vocabulary instruction is more than teaching definitions—it’s giving scholars the language they need to think, comprehend, communicate, and thrive!

Powerful vocabulary instruction is intentional and multidimensional. We can front-load essential words before reading, explore meaning in context, build receptive vocabulary so scholars understand the words they hear and read, and strengthen expressive vocabulary so they confidently use those words in speaking and writing.

💡 This Week’s Teaching Tip: Don’t teach a word once and move on. Give scholars repeated opportunities to hear it, see it, say it, read it, write it, and use it!

The more meaningful encounters scholars have with a word, the more likely that word becomes part of their working vocabulary.

🗣️ Know it. Say it. Use it. Own it.

Because stronger vocabulary builds stronger comprehension—and stronger comprehension builds stronger readers! 💛📖
