During this year's Cowan Symposium the Cowan Pottery Museum Associates officially donated 4 bisque sports plates (fired but unglazed) designed by Viktor Schreckengost into the Cowan Pottery Museum collection. These pieces are an asset to the Museum's goal of telling the full story of Cowan's career and his efforts to revive his Studio's designs for a mass market during his time at Syracuse China Co.

ICADS invites you to join us on the hunt for the shape of Art Deco as a global celebration of World Art Deco Day! April 28th is known as Art Deco Day because it marks the beginning of the 1925 Paris Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts.

During the entire month of April, post your photos of the “elongated octagonal” shape that flourished in the years following the 1925 Paris exhibition - and tag us! Indeed, this shape, extremely popular at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, enjoyed enormous success worldwide in the second half of the 1920s, then gradually disappeared in the 1930s. It can be found in all areas: magazines, architecture, jewelry, furniture and beyond. Its success was such that in 1925, at the end of the exhibition, art critic, Antony Goissaud, asked: “After Ogival Architecture, will we have Octagonal Architecture?”

The idea behind this photographic safari, focused on this geometric shape, is to highlight this world wide trend that symbolized modernity and remains one of the most emblematic shapes of Art Deco. Show us what you’ve got in your city or what you’ve seen on your travels!

This image serves as an example of the shape in use.
